Just had the same prob Dunc and used some engine degreaser in a spray bottle then careful application of pressure washer. All spangly now and no sensor problems. Your lean idle is liekly to be a lambda plug connection, though I imagine you are ahead of me on that.

Cheers Andy - am going to go through every single plug in there one by one and get them as clean as clean can be.

It will be the cleanest the engine bay/engine has ever been :D

Correct me if i am wrong but doesn't the 1997 STi have 5 fuses associated with the ABS system??

If i were to hazard a guess at where about on the car some of these fuses might be i would say the ABS relay box in the engine bay by the suspension turret??

Can't correct you or I wouldn't be asking. This isn't a pub quiz night, I just don't know but want to stop the ABS working :D

God, that took an age.....

Cam position sensor sorted
ABS Sensor sorted
Knock sensor sorted

Also whipped the fuel pump out and checked at that end to see if the return to tank feed was locating into the right place ie the surge tank (it was) and that all was clear and free.

Filled up with fresh petrol and still running lean on idle. It is fine once under a little power (even in closed loop) with fuel trims bringing it back into line, but for some reason the short term fuel trim does not want to work at idle making it mega lumpy.

I guess that I will get this sorted when the mapping is done, until then I am just thankful that I can datalog again for the first time since the ecu fried.

I do need to get myself a new laptop though as the macbook will only allow one usb connection whilst in parallels :(
