Today sorted overheating prob by fitting thermostat and bled system.
Checked valve timing and this all appears to be good. Redid the compression check and got same values so did oil test and increased to 85 and 89 on 3 & 4.
Odd thing is now I've had it running a lot this afternoon seems to be holding same figures so appears oil poss not making difference. I took her for bout 3 mile run and she is running so much better than before.
All of these things, plus the hone marks in the cylinder and other discoveries I have made make me think the engine was freshly rebuilt put in the car and would not run right so he sold it.
I'm thinking correct me if wrong that we are now looking at a fuelling prob as when you get her above 4000rpm and on the second choke she purrs[:D]
The first half of the throttle coughs and splutters when you put your foot hard to the floor she picks up and flys.
I have adjusted the Fuel pressure regulator and given it a little more fuel but again I don't know what pressure the 40DCOE's should have behind them.
Going try to find the correct jets required for the carbs on this engine and check they are correct, then my knowledge runs out and I call in a specialist!!!!!!!

Could be cr@p but the Webers have a float chamber with the float regulating the fuel level. Too much pressure will overcome the float valve and cause overfuelling and flooding.

Good point Gerry,
The problem could actually be the float level setting which is very crucial in carbs. It could be too low and underfluelling and if you have upped the pressure, this could be just pushing the input valve open with the pressure.
I think a RR tune is in order with someone old school like Dave at Emerald.
3 & 4 compressions still seem low though.

Funny you should say that :-D

Now it's just about driveable was gonna call you tomorrow. Jay was going to buy a leak down kit but then remembered he did not have a compressor #-o

Have found a poss replacement engine on ebay though with all the bits plus gearbox that might get as a back up plan if goes for right price. This is running and in the car.
Something have learned from Jay "You can never have enough spare parts"  LOL

Before I start just want to say big thanks to Gary for today cheers mate.

Took car to see Gary today and he did quick leak down test on couple cylinders and compression checks on all. No leeks present so can now see where I went wrong
Compression has now swapped round and front two are low and backs are fine!!!!!! ](*,) ](*,)
Checked the compression on couple of cylinders and only 10% loss down each bore which is well within acceptable levels.
After quick chat with Gary we are thinking that the hydraulic lifters are not working properly and sticking hence sometimes working sometimes not. :x
On advice of Gary now have new set of hydraulic lifters on order (bargain

Glad you are getting it sorted Sue,
Its such a pain when things like this happen and you just seem to go around in circles, had the same prob with a hyundai years ago and ended up putting another engine in it, never found out hat the problem was, apart that it was a hyundai

Glad you are making progress Suz.
Looks like you don't need to get another engine now then

Well done Suz( and Gary) :thumb:

Funny how it is often the small things that cause the biggest problems.
