I would chat to a subaru tuner to find out for sure.

Works out as a easy-ish drop in replacement and with the right turbo and other bits should see 800 combined bhp/torque.

food for thought and a combined 800 sounds even better in a lightish car, i have been offered a MD blah blah T turbo for reasonable money but it does not stop there does it , injectors, ecu , pump, mapping, cost of engine cost of turbo and a pretty penny on labour alone i would imagine,
the wifes expecting a holiday in febuary aswell , lucky we havent booked it yet , just need to break the news :? anyone got a spare room

The std EJ257 STI bottom end (even with chocopistons) would give the 800 combined Gerry.

Some of the info that I have established as rough rules of thumb (obviously depending on supporting mods):

+ forged pistons .. 450 /450
+ forged rods .. 500 / 500
+ better sleeves .. over 500 / 500 with reliability
+ better crank /heads .. higher useable rev limit

Not that I have been looking into this :D

It starts getting really expensive at the top end of this as you can imagine but I still think an off the shelf short block for less than

If you have the kind of dosh that Trev's been chucking at the car, it'd be better to up the internals during this rebuild, ready for when the bigger turbo arrives :)
