Calling Motec experts

Post by vpulsar »

Hi all, I've got a couple of questions about my Motec M48 pro and would appreciate any thoughts from the people who might no the answers.

First question is what exactly is involved in turning on the anti lag ?, I have it as a feature on the Motec but would like to know just what's involved.

Second question I'd like to change to coil packs at some point in the future, So would like to know what I need to achieve this ?.

My car is a Nissan Pulsar Gti-R.

I've done some research on the subject but it's all been a little to tech speak for my simple brain to grasp    .

ok, Not Motec specific but in short...

1) Antilag is BAD for the turbo. The motec essentially opens the throttle 50%, adds some extra fuel, and ignites it on the opposite stroke so it fires through the turbo, keeping it spooling, rather than containing it to the cylinder. When activated, normally on a switch, it is always running below a predefinded % throttle. This does enable massive boost off the line, great flames and shotgun sounds, and no lag on gear changes, but unless you want to be replacing the tubby on a regular basis do not bother. All you need is an electronic throttle controller and some antilag mapping. I would look at launch control as an option.

2) You should only move to coil packs (wasted spark or COP coil on plug) when you need to. Not only will you need the coils and wiring, but you may also need a full ignition remap.

Cheers for that, My understanding is that you can run more or less anti lag as required, And it's switchable so I could use it now again as need be which should prolong the life of the turbo somewhat  .

I already have launch control on the pro version mate  .

As for the coil packs it's something I've wanted to do for a long time, But as you say as long as the current ignition system is coping then it's not a priority .

I run a Gems ECU on my Impreza which has switchable anti-lag, this I am sure is the same as on teh Motec, it can be mapped to give as little or as much boost as is required.

Mine has mild ALS mapped, so hits circa 0.4-0.5 bar, and my maximum normal boost is 1.6 bar. This is so that my weak little IHI turbo doesn't spit its dummy to much!

I usually use it just for my last timed run on a Sprint when I go banzai! My thinking is it should help get a few extra tenths off the line as the turbo is already on boost.

If you just want pops and bangs on the over-run it can just be added to the normal map, by richening the off throttle fueling.

:o No I think I'll leave that kind of mapping to those younger members that hang around down at the local McDonald's car park      .
