Can't trust DVLA to get anything right on an import. Friend of mine has a MY 98 Type R on a P plate. He bought it as a 96 till I pointed out it wasn't. My car was registered as a 2.5L when there was no such thing. They only way to tell for sure is the VIN plate.

 I give up. I reckon its an Enzo with a full Classic Impreza bodykit.

'N' plate means nothing - brother has a V3 STi type RA 96 car thats registeres correctly on an 'N' plate

JDM cars come out late in the previous year to the model they are, hence 96 model cars are available late 95

Thanks for the help everyone.

This guy was not in his Impreza on the track day, but in a 325 BMW for some reason so no wonder i went past him with not much trouble lol.

He and others commented on how quick my standard M3 on road tyres was. I was timed at 1.28!
