Project Runabout

Post by Stuart »

I've had to face a few facts in recent times, things that have been difficult to swallow. Counting many of you guys as friends I don't mind admitting that I've nearly lost my business and my house in the last couple of years. I've lost my hair, gained a few rolls of fat around my middle and now my bloody GTR is off of the road for 6 months or more!!

Life can be cruel. Well, to cheer myself up I decided to do something impulsive. I decided to buy a cheap old car that would make me grin. I made this slighlty childish decision on Sunday morning and by the same evening I had bought it :thumb:

I'm a bit new to eBay, scares of fraud and mugs ripping me off have forced me to be guarded but I had a few quid burning a hole in my pocket and those times are dangerous.........the money had to go. I needed a new toy :D

Here is my 1988 8v GTi :D I've always fancied a MK2 having seen my brothers, Steve's and so many others over the years. Their character is undeniably one of durability, classic styling and there are still a good few GTi's being used in anger around the World. All appealing and the opening price on the car in the advert was all of the encouragement I needed. Bidding commenced!

Paintwork is a bit poo but nothing to worry about

Image
The car is dying for a really thorough cleaning session and I intend to 'muller' it on Wednesday if I'm around (trip to London pending)

So initial thoughts are good.
Bad points
Exhaust is blowing a bit
Paintwork far from perfect
Mish mash of keys where various locks have been replaced over the years

Good points
Overall condition for a 19 year old car is superb
The sheer amount of new parts on it (brakes, suspension etc etc)
Non chavved (unsure aboout the eyebrow for the headlamps)
The way it drives
My bloody great grin :D

This will be a great distraction from my long term loss of GTR action. 120bhp doesn't make up for 400 odd but the lack of bills will be nice and it will give the chance to do the Skyline right as opposed to getting withdrawal symptoms in February and rushing the work. Hugemungous thanks to SteveVR6 for the advice and help. Hope you enjoyed the drive mate ;)

Looks great mate, nicely done (with the added bonus of a guarantee of your money back as long as you don't chav it or bend it, how many cars do you get that with?)

Well done Stu, I knew i'd convert you some day :-D

A very clean and tidy car for the year. This should put a smile on your face everytime you drive it, i know, mine does. I'll give you 6 months till you start stripping bits out and we'll all see it lapping Snetterton in the new year

It drove really well on the way home, pulling well through all the gears, no lumps or bumps anywhere.

Good luck with it Stu, hope you enjoy it :thumb:
