I'm looking to improve spec of Laptop, Who can help?

Post by Bealo »

I have a Sony Vaio VGN - T2XP (the really tiny one)

It has a 60gb hard drive and a 1.20ghz processer. 1.19ghz, 504 mb ram

I like the computer but it seems a bit slow so i was hoping to improve it.

Can anyone help me either by supplying parts or supplying parts and fitting them???? I would also like some to give the laptop a service (if thats what it's called?)

I use it here in the desert and it is a bit dirty/sandy etc. I haven't really got much of a clue on computers but i hate getting ripped of and thats what i think will happen if i take it to one of the BIG stores.

Any ideas/comments??????

Thanks

Doing a clean install of windows often helps to quicken it up aswell as windows is not very good at cleaning itself and downloaded porn always slows it down eventually :D - you will want to take backups of your important stuff first and all your ISP settings, passwords first as these can & will probably be lost.

If that doesnt speed the little blighter up - ram is what you need :D

Try http://www.crucial.com - they have a series of drop down so that you select the right memory.

Go the the biggest single RAM that you can afford or need, but 1GB should do the job.

The trouble with laptops is that there is very little you can do with them.

It can be hard but try to workout where any bottlenecks are but you should do this. Look in task manager and see:
a) if the processor max's a lot of the time
b) if you are using much more than your installed physical memory. (IMO 600MB in use or more needs upgrading)
c) Also look in 'my computer' to see how much disk space you have (should have 10% free minimum)

As Duncan said, a windows reinstall will easy things but how much? and how long for?

Following a little research:
If a) is a problem, along with graphics and sound, get a new laptop.
If b) is a problem, then you can upgrade the memory from 0.5Gb (fixed) upto 1.5Gb with 1Gb car see below
If c) is a problem then either increase your hard disk capacity, or get an external storage device (cheaper and more useful)

Memory - VGN-TX2XP/B (you will need to confirm this is correct model number - if unsure http://support.vaio.eu/login/login.asp? ... en_GB_cons)
Memory Speed (MHz) 400.0
Memory Type DDR SDRAM (PC2-3200 DDR) (512MB on board, 1x512MB)
Max. Memory (MB) 1536.0
Memory Size (MB) 1024.0

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/62654 - 512MB giving you 1GBtotal
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/82383 - 1GB giving you 1.5GBtotal (

I have just done the checks you said and my findings are as follows.

a, usually between 20%-40%

b, total 514480 i haven't a clue what these numbers mean???
available 119964
system cache 243764

c, hard drive is 48.8 gb with a total of 13.35 gb free, it is split into 2 sections c drive and d drive?????

With you now seeing these results what do you recommend??????

Thanks

a, that is good news for your bank balance ;-)

b, in task manager look for the number in green with the bar graph indicator - this should say 'memory usage' or 'PF usage'. And should be specified in MB

c, As long as you have 10% free on the C partition, and 10% free on the D partition, you will following a good rule of thumb.

Let me know b, and confirm c,
