One for you clever Computer people. (networking)

Post by Miniwilliams »

Hi.

Well I give up I've followed the network setting up wizard and it doesn't seem to work.

I have two PCs, one I use all the time, and I'm running out of hard drive space, so I thought why not make use of the old PC and I can use this for more storage.

Both machines run windows XP.

I'm using a belkin 5e patch cable, that I was advised at PC world, and would do the job for me and I'd just be able to plug it into each PC with out a hub and all would be good.

On my main PC I managed to view the new shortcut icon for the other PC, but it would let me open it. And i'm not even sure it's still there now.

Any help would truly be splendid.
Cheers
Matt

Make sure both P's are in the same workgroup......right click my computer.......properties.......computer name tag..........give it a name, and, press the button next to the join domain bit........make sure, both PCs are in a workgroup...if not, create one (just make a name up and put it in the box)

Have you shared out the hard drive of the other pc so you can map a drive to it?

on the other pc, open my computer, right click the c: drive and select sharing.....share out the drive (give it a name, or just use the default name)

after the drive is shared out, on the pc with low disk space, you should be able to map to the newly shared drive..

open my computer, go to tools.....map network drive.......select a drive letter and, in the network path enter the other pc name followed by the share name you gave to the drive from the step above.....

Also Matt - you're using Zonealarm if i remember rightly - do you have it installed on both machines.

You need to setup and IP range within Zone Alarm to tell the machine to trust the other one.

To find out your IP address - click, Start, in the run box type CMD
Then type IPCONFIG. This will tell you the IP address of your machine. You can then assume that the other machine is the next in the range.

In most cases your range will be 192.168.1.xxx

Go into zonealarm, firewall and then Zones. Add a range and enter the IP address you saw in when you ran IPconfig - do the range from you machine through to maybe another 10 ... i.e. 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.110 - the last digits maybe different on yours - these were just examples.

If easier give me a call tomorrow evening and i'll talk you through it.

Or even easier - disconnect your internet connection and turn off zonealarm - that should do it :)

The boys are spot on - so just a bit extra as an FYI - the default share on your other pcs C drive is C$ - so you'd map to it by typing \\machine-name\C$ - If you type in IPCONFIG as Ben suggested on both machines you'll have both IP addresses confirmed - if you then type in PING 192.168.x.x (ip address of other pc) you should get the ping ack'd by the other pc - assuming zone alarm is turned off - this will tell you if the pcs are talking at an ip level - you then repeat this from the other end back to the original pc you'll know that the ping goes both ways - then you need to look at workgroups as suggested by Jakester.
