The Worst car you ever owned?

Post by russ979 »

Ok we all know there are some seriously cool/well sorted cars on here!.... But who his man enough to own up to telling all about the worst car they ever owned? I don`t mean that hand-me-down free metro as a first car, but a car that you actualy picked as a main driver!:blush5:

For me it was a 1986 D reg fiat regatta 85s in metallic brown purchased from ely car auction in littleport. From the fall of the hammer to picking up the keys, i was a well chuffed 18yr old. I had just bought a fairly new 1600cc car with central locking, electric windows (one up on my all mates!) and a dashboard like blackpool eluminations! (i soon discovered these were warning lights!:iamwithstupid:) It also did`nt take me long to discover that the exhaust had a genuine scaffold pole as a centre section! It would conk out daily without warning and was flat out at 70! I demolished one of my parents antique roller shutter garage doors with it, when one day i came up the drive, put my foot on the brake and it promptly spat out the brake pads! (evidently not un-common on these!) I eventualy sold it to a guy who four days after buying it phoned me up to say it had conked out on him! How i stopped myself from saying "Wow it went for four days?" i will never know!- Bizarrely though it was a 80`s fiat that was`nt rusty and all the electrics worked!

Anyone else brave enough to confess their motoring sh1t box errors?:D

A written off Peugeot 205 1.6 Gti - being only 18 I didn't know about hpi - bought the first car I viewed on a wet day - when dried found a great big scratch on the bonnet, dents down the side - but most importantly - no VIN .. got pulled by the police to find the car was a cut and shut - i.e. 3/4 of the car was original by the drivers side had all been replaced including the parts of the bulk head where the vin once was ... had nothing but problems with it - broken gearbox, knackered drive shafts, burst heater matrix !! .. oh well.

mine was an auction ford orion 1.4 gl D reg when i was 18/19 , i wanted a car that day but the auction was drawing to a close so the onion was mine, the car did last me a year though somehow ,,, the rust was shocking for a 6/7year old car but credit to the engine it carried on running and most of the time sounded like pnumatic drills breaking up the road, i remember putting a new wing on because of the rust and had it sprayed up but within two days the car left the road and hit a tree stump , new wing buggered :)

Man, I can beat all of those!
I had company cars for the first couple of years and then I graduated into the real World....budget motoring! My first privately owned car is something of a character car. A Suzuki SJ410.....oh yeah

That was the car that I owned when Tanya and I met. That was the car that used to ferry me up and down from Essex each weekend when we were courting. That was the car that moved Tan and her stuff down into the little flat we first shared in Chelmer Village. It was also the car the iced up on the inside as well as the outside. It was also the car that I returned to one night to find someone had torn the passenger door off to get the stereo out. It was also the car that needed daily redex to get the thing running. It was the only car to date that needed a new engine during my tenure. All my previous cars were brand new so I never looked at the dash warning lights. I soon learned that the little red genie lamp was infact the oil lamp!! Oops. It was also the only car I've owned that has been wrapped in wallpaper. A spited ex-girlfriend decided that she would decorate the car whilst Tan and I were having a lovely Italian meal :D Oh how we laughed!

I'll regale you with the joys of Citroen Xantia on another occasion.

I brought a 1989 Renault 19 1.4 TSE from the car auction and to be fair for the first year it was a pretty good car then one day travelling to see my Nan a Nissan Micra decided that he wanted to be on my piece of road and pulled out of a layby straight into my path!! From that day on I constantly had problems with the car. One of the strangest was some of the electrical gremlins that occured if you opened the electric windows the sunroof would open or if you pushed on the hazard lights the whole dash (every light) would flash!!! I also blew the engine on this car and went through numerous clutch cables!! :nopity:

Austin 1100 and the 1300GT version. 'Nuff said really.Basil Fawlty summed up ownership perfectly.

If I get an hour or two later, I'll give a run down of the catalogue.

Ooh an austin 1100, That nearly top trumps my regatta?:) Your old GT is now quite a classic! can`t see a facelifted fiat strada saloon ever making that status?:)
Now will anyone own up to having owned an fso? or lada samara? or an alfa arnea thinking they were getting abit of italian flair instead of a re-bagded nissan cherry? Did anyone have an allegro vdp?

It wasn't my car but my best mates car when we were 17. It was a 1.6 GL Ford Capri which he bought from Great Yarmouth auctions. The drivers side door was smashed in and it wasn't until driving home that we noticed the car crabed because it was bent like a banana.
On the way home the throttle got stuck wide open twice. The first time wasn't to bad becaused we just pulled over and fixed it but the second time it happened wasn't so good. We were going along Lowestoft sea front when it happened and my mate turned the key off to stop the engine. The engine stopped but the steering lock came on and the brakes wouldn't work. Luckily I pulled the handbrake and we stopped with all 4 wheels on the path about an inch away from a wall. It was a bloody good job no one was walking there at the time

Here's a candidate for the worst so far: Morris Marina estate, 1300 I think. Was given to my girlfriend at the time by her dad (great present, eh!) and I inherited it when I needed to move a house. It was just hideous to drive. Seemed reliable enough, with occasional attention to its trunnions, until the oil light came on climbing a big hill fully loaded. Let it cool, bunged some more oil in and carried on. Ran only on 3 cylinders soon after that, turned out there was a big chunk missing from one of the valves. Man, it was awful!
