Thanks APT/RossSport

Post by Vectraman »

Just got the Vectra 4x4 back from APT after having a 5 speed box, RS diff, Ohlins R & T, MOT and some other bits and pieces done.

5speed box is a revelation, no springiness like the 6speed had, and really short throw too. Totally transforms the drive, would recommend this mod to anyone with a 6speed Evo thinking of having one. Just need to run her with my TomTom now to check the speedo readings with the new gearing ;)

Cheers to Gary & Danny (and Ross for the parts), top job as usual!

Evo 6-speed boxes are made of cheese, Ben. Similar outer casing dimensions + an extra gear = a significantly weaker box. ;)

Thanks for the kind words, Ian- glad you're pleased with it. I'm sure Gary will comment when he can! :D

Exactly why I ditched the S15 6 speed for the 300zx 5 speed :) Plus I couldn't bare smashing a

The 6 speed box had a brilliant party piece - when you changed down from 6th, a heavy spring in the gear change always tried to push the lever left, into 3rd! Not good at high speeds... also, as mentioned the 5speed is a lot stronger, although doddery old me managed to make my 6 speed last 97000 miles and still going...

Danny, i don't know if my old turbo was on the way out or the new one is just plain better but the car takes off like a rocket now at a little over 3000rpm instead of nearly 4000 :)

never understood Mitsi logic with the 6spd...............

we used std 5spd's for years and they coped with everything from rally to drag abuse.....6spd's stuggle with fast road work and the shift quality is poor at best

on the other hand, Subaru went from having a marginal 5spd to a bonkers proof 6spd

Mitsi followed fashion putting a 6speed in, but did it on the cheap. For the Evo10 they went back to the 5speed and all the journos slated the decision when they road tested them.

Glad you like the de-winged look Stuart, frankly rear visibility for me was zero and i couldn't see it adding any meaningful downforce at the speeds i drive most of the time. I took her into the mountains yesterday to 'test' her and had a blast. Missus was screaming a bit though and she's banned me from going up their on my own for some reason :)
