thought it worth an ask on here as i know there are a few ford lovers on here
im looking at a car for the good lady to do the school runs etc..
she is currently in an audi a3 1.6 so 3 doors are ok
browsing the net i came accross a focus st170 its a grey 03plate 3 door on ebay local to me for 2k ono

anyone know anything about these ? and common problems etc...
we used to have a 1.6 zetec 1998 focus several years ago and it was a bloody good car

or do i go with first thoughts of a 1.8t sport audi a3 or even a 1.8t golf gti
or what i really wanted a 1.8t quattro sport a3 but put off when i looked at how bloody heavy the 4wd system is

e46 compact is an option

only looking to spend max 2.5k on something , any other ideas

Is there anything wrong with the A3 that you already have? Just not sure why you're getting something so similar.......

The ST170's are pretty tough and reliable going by one of my friends car. Needs nothing other than oil and fuel. Economy is nothing special but he does drive it like he hates it, which he doesn't.

Not bad little cars. I prefer the Compacts, but then I would.

the ford focus was one of the best handling cars back in the day when it was new.
me and paul have a mate who has a st170 and he absolutly loves it to bits
as fair as were aware he's not had a problem but the engine if looked after
are quite bullet proof really.
my brother has a 2.0 focus and ive driven that and was supprised at how nippy
it was, had good torque from low down and drove really smoothly.

If you're happy to wring its neck, it'll go well, and they do handle superbly. Check the paperwork to see if the dash has been done, as 52-53 cars suffered terminal dashboard and electric power failures. If it's not been done, it could be a bargaining point for you.
