Ive got a sky router at home, and the signal on my new laptop around the house is spot on everywhere.
I have a desktop PC which i normally run a Netgear WG111V3 usb adaptor so i can get the net on the PC.
Having now moved the PC to the room furthest away the signal is pants/non existant. Its 2 maybe 3 years old.
Is there a way to either boost the router or is there some form of much better option for my desktop PC, there is no way i can move the router and there is no phone line anywhere near to plug into? Wireless is my only option!
Could i get a stronger usb wireless reciever? Do they make mega strong ones?
Advice much appreciated.
Thanks!!
J

You have a number of options mate:
1, get a decent network card for your pc, should be a PCI card with a massive aerial. You can pick these up for about

Gareth your a star, really appreciate that thank you. I did have my doubts about the wireless adaptor, worked well when the router was next door, but 4 rooms accross its rubbish.
Ill look into getting a decent PCI card initially and see how that works, ill have a chat with the guys in Maplin about it maybe on Saturday and see how that works, i cant be using the laptop all the time as all my decent software is on the desktop and they require internet access
If not, the option of a better router sounds possible, although the one i have was sent by Sky when i signed up, can i just buy any decent router and plug it in or will it have to come from Sky, im really not clued up on how this all works!

I'd go with option 1 - those usb wireless jobbies are pants.

I've got two usb WiFi dongles and an 'N' rated wireless 300Mbps triple antenna 4-port Gigabit router. My first dongle is 'G' rated, has an external antenna, works well on my old laptop anywhere in the house, all the way to the bottom of my garden and in the shed/garage.
In my shed I can listen to streaming audio and video without trouble. The router is upstairs in my office at the front of the house so there are many walls in the way doing their best to block out the signal wherever i go.
My latest USB dongle is 'N' rated and works extremely well in the shed and elsewhere in the house. It also works well in my car at my parking spot across a busy main road and i can stream all sorts from my PC wirelessly and at high speed.
I can recommend the LM Technologies Ltd 'N' rated 300Mbps WiFi dongle that also work's in 'G' mode if you only have a 'G' rated router. My partner is the sales & marketing manager and brought home the dongle for me to test. It passed with flying colours so now i've retired my old one in favour of this one.
It's all down to the quality of manufacture and electronics within. Not all USB dongles are the same therefore not all are pants. My old 'G' rated dongle still did a pretty good job however in my book faster is better!!
Buy wisely

I'd go option 2 I have 4 in my house and 1 in the garage (deattached but on same main) works a treat plus you can just take it with you into any room with a mains socket on the same main. Gte the 200mb ones for streaming/gaming although I have the 85mb ones as I got them when they first came out.
I use solwise plugs:

Thanks for all the advise guys, a local computer shop owner in Attleborough is allowing me to try the Plugs and the PCI cards first and see how i get on. Appreicate all the advise. We're not just car nuts on here

Just add - option 1 is what I needed to do to get my PC to work - router in front of house lounge, PC was in back room upstairs .. connection speed perfect with a PCI card.
