Been looking for a new TV for an age now but it's a price/spec maze.

The sort of thing I have in mind is 42" ish, 100Hz, 1080p, but

LCD or Plasma (not sure of the pros/cons.)
What make, named brand or not?
Contrast ratio?
Brightness?
How many HDMI?
What other connectors?

PC World currently have a good specced LG for

I would definitely recommend plasma technology over LCD; the picture is much more vivid and the old problems with longevity with Plasmas is long gone. I've owned lots and would say it's unlikely I would ever buy anything else now.

Best of luck

Thanks Stu :)

When I asked the guy in Comet, he said the LCD gave a sharp picture and the plasma a softer pic

the only advice i can give you is measure the size you want at home and stick to that size no matter how small they look in the shop . i didn't and nearly ended up taking it back as it was so bloody big in the lounge when i got home it hurt my eyes  watch out for a gloss finish screen near a window as you may see the reflection of the window on the screen.

cheers

For your budget I would say go for a plasma as you will get a bigger screen size and better picture. I prefer lcd, but you will have stretch to quite a few more quid for a really good lcd. Sony make a great set, but even with this brand the price varies considerably depending whether you go for Bravia, Bravia Plus or Bravia Pro. The more you spend, the better picture you get and less motion blur.
The downside with plasma is shorter life, far heavier and 30% more power consumption
If you decide on plasma, go for Panasonic.

What do you call a really good lcd and what sort of money for a middle to good spec lcd? I've been told Samsung make the best lcd panels?
