More additions :)
Tan has started again so our menagerie has expanded somewhat!!
We collected 8 more chickens yesterday including 5 cockerels and 3 hens.......the buggers certainly know when the morning is! We are currently working on getting some geese and a Dexter too (Small Heifer)

Dexter's are especially good for smallholdings as they will produce loads of mik (too much for us), calve easily each year and then the calves can be fed up and eaten every other year! With the average meat yield weighing in at 100kgs per calf, I reckon it's a great move.

The Geese will do a good job of keeping the grass down (as per above) with the added advantage of great big eggs and a nice Christmas treat too.

Roll on 2011 and a step towards being more self sufficient!

?? We took the property off of the market in November, and you and I have discussed this at least twice? :)

You know what Tan is like; I asked her what she wanted for her birthday and she said "I would like a cow that's black and white and small, and I will call her Yum Yum so that when she is old enough I can eat her." Just like that, all in one sentence and with a seven year olds grin and sheer cheek.

There was me expecting a pair of shoes or a coat to be the answer!

The auctions are next Saturday and the Geese should be within a few weeks. Fingers crossed :hurray:

I thought milking cows aren't any good for meat? or do you breed some for meat and some for milk?
