Just a quick one reference the location of side exit/front exit exhaust

The guy that puts all of my cars through their MOT's has offered to fabricate the side exit/front exit exhaust/s for my 'Z'

However, are there any issues (back pressure, stress on turbo seals etc) that I need to consider before going ahead with this?

Everything (turbos, seals etc are brand new) so not running 20 year old seals and the like

I was just wondering what the legal restrictions are for front exit and side exit exhausts (I read somewhere, that they had to be at least 30cm from a passenger door?)

I appreciate the fact that it will be louder: though that won't be an issue with regards to it passing the MOT, but might attract unwanted attention from the boys in blue when I drive outside Hereford.

Any expected performance gains, spool up time, weight reduction etc (advice please)????

The VG is fitted with twin Labree downpipes, I'm assuming that the custom pipes will just extend from these?

1) A few issues for your turbo, and the guys at Turbo Dynamics had this write up on their site

Cheers mate, very usefull input and loads to think about

Slightly different to the usual ignorant and ill informed responses elsewhere, eh 'MONSTER'

I've test fitted the fuel cell, and luckily there's plenty of clearance.

A custom filler neck will need to be knocked up so that the stock fuel door can be used

(I've sourced a nice carbon fibre fuel door in the US, so should be able to fit that as soon as it arrives)

I just need to source a second FACET pump and a Bosch 044 fuel pump, and fit a one way valve

I replaced the Bailey's and trial fitted the HKS SSQV's (though they are both obviously in need of a serious cleanup)

Lesson learnt on that one....get some pics sent before you hand over payment

I reckon a complete strip down/rub down of each bov's and a coating of black enamel paint should offer a bit of protection

Image

the only alternative I suppose would be to buy new......

I'm hoping that these work ok, but I won't know that until I get her driveable again.

I've got a list of parts that I need to source before I can happily say that the car is driveable and they're all proving pretty hard to find second hand at the right price.

I've got spare parts and other kit that I need to sell, so that I can fund these last few parts

I'm also now looking for a set of CARBING strut braces to replace the current NISSAN MOTORSPORT ones that I imported from the States, like a mug, assumed that they were NISMO

Does anybody on BP have experience of the ETS intercoolers from the US?

I've chatted with Michael Roark at ETS (Extreme Turbo Systems) in the US and the spec of their intercoolers appears impressive.

Apparently ETS build their products in house after a lot of R&D, with rigorous comparative testing against other well known brands such as HKS, GREDDY etc.

One of the official distributors for ETS products in the UK are Wallace Performance in Scotland.

I've chatted with Matthew Lawson at Wallace Performance via e-mail on a few occassions and he rates the ETS products very highly, though by his own admission he would do, being an official distributor for ETS in the UK.

I have no reason to doubt what either Michael or Matthew are saying and the ETS intercooler looks like a quality piece of kit.

I'm just looking for an informed, un-biased opinion before I commit to buying and running an ETS fmic.

  • Completely Tig welded and Pressure Checked
  • Completely mandrel bent 2" steel piping
  • Bright Silver Ceramic Powder Coat Finish
  • Premium 3 layer Silicone Connectors
  • Stainless Steel T-Bolt Clamps
  • Clears fog lights and retains crash beam
  • No Cutting of Frame or Bumper Support
  • Allows for up to 18psi on stock turbos, without detonation.
  • Fits with stock bumper and under tray.
The installation of the ETS FMIC is straight forward, once the bumper cover is removed, the plastic ducting in front of the radiator will be removed as well. The Intercooler will then be bolted to the crash beam via 4 self tapping screws. Then the piping will be plumbed into the stock piping that runs up and down the core support by the radiator. This will leave you with a full hard piped system. There will be trimming of the nose when it goes back on, most of the trimming will be in the lower grill area, and in the air ducts for the piping clearance. Also note that as the Intercooler is 10" tall, it will hang down 10" from the bottom of the crash beam. On some stock noses, this can cause the intercooler to hang below the bumper cover- Measure your car to see if you have 10" from the bottom of the crash beam to the bottom of the nose. Also note that due to the 4" thickness, this intercooler will not work with the JWT or Stillen Intakes. We recommend the ETS, Greddy, or HKS Intakes for this kit.
The amount of performance gain will depend primarily upon how much power you are making. On cars that make less than 400whp there will be an average increase of 15-20hp over the stock side mounts. On vehicles with over 400whp and on upgraded turbos, the performance increase will typically be about 8hp per 100hp of power. So at 600hp the expected power increase should be in the area of 48hp. This intercooler is rated for 820hp. One thing to note is that because of the lower outlet temps of the FMIC, the boost limit can usually be raised another 1-1.5 psi without any increase in the tendency to knock (detonation). By taking advantage of this, you can count on an additional 10-20hp over the boost level you were running previously. This means that cars on stock turbos can potentially gain up to 40hp, while cars with larger turbos may see increases of up to 80HP. Where the front mount really shines over the stock side mounts is in situations where the car is ran over and over without cool down. In these situations the stock units become heat-soaked and can no longer cool the charge air. When this happens they loose substantial efficiency and will quickly cause a lack of power and detonation. To help put this in perspective, on the stock side mounts the charge air on your first acceleration pull will be in the 130deg range, then on the second pull it will jump to 150deg, on the 3rd pull it will be in the 170's and it is here that it will level out. At these temperatures there will be a substantial loss of power and it will be very bad to run the engine into detonation. With the Front Mount Intercooler the charge air will be in the 105deg range on the first pull , then on the second pull it will be in the 115's , and it will stay in the 115-125deg range no matter how hard the car is driven. With these low charge air temps, the front mount will not lose power- no matter how hard you push it, the performance will be consistent and at 120deg the chance of detonation will be reduced dramatically.
With a potential power increase of 40hp on vehicle with stock turbos, the ETS front mount intercooler kit should be a serious consideration for any performance enthusiast running over 12psi on the 300zx. This IC will allow you to safely run much more boost than any side-mounts available, and performance will not drop off no matter how hard you run the car. The installation of the ETS unit is the easiest of any front mount kit on the market , and no cutting of the fog light or bumper support area, you will be up and running in no time. and with a core size of 24x10x4, lifetime warranty, and full piping, no other units even come close.

These are pics of the cores that Michael sent to me by way of a comparison

No experience of the brand but the kit looks pretty good (from my limited knowledge) If a tuner will happily stand behind the product, I'd say that's half of the battle done and dusted.

My only thought would be aftersales support in the event of a cock up/warranty issue etc; if Wallace can support you well enough in this respect, I see no issue.

On a separate note, a friend of mine rang me on Saturday night to say that he'd just won a Z32 on eBay for silly money. He's bought this purely for a few laughs on track days so that will be another one joining the fold pretty soon :)

I've got a good feeling about Matthew at Wallace Performance and the ETS kit in general.
They were both very helpful from the off, offering up all sorts of useful advice.

Judging by Paul Nelson's (1117whp/654 ft lbs) Evo below and the big shout out that they've given to ETS, I feel confident that they make good kit.

It looks like ETS sponsor 4 cars in the States (one car competing in Time Attack and three 8 sec/9 sec drag cars) all running either ETS turbo kits, air intakes and/or intercoolers

I'll be dropping Matthew an e-mail tonight to see if they have an answer on shipping costs and subsequent after sales support etc

as for your mates Z32, that's great news in some ways, knowing that another 'Z' is gonna see a bit of track time in its life but also quite sad, to know that Z32's can be had for less than secondhand Fiesta money these days.

There aren't many other cars that offer nigh on 300bhp twin turbo action for half a grand

Things will change, I'm certain of that

Once we get more Z32's properly set up and competing with the more established motors

I must admit, Danny's eBay find got me searching too. The last thing I need right now is another car, but a rear wheel drive turbo does tick a few boxes. I haven't owned a Zed yet and everytime I watch Kill Bill, I long for a nice subtle looking street sleeper.......with around 400bhp :D
