My hero was JS. When I were a lad, we went round Silverstone in similar times, only his time was on the GP circuit and mine was on the club one 8)
On one occasion I did a practice day at Silverstone (before the days of track days), I was in my 850 Mini. As I drove into the paddock, the marshal warned me 'watch your mirrors as there's some fast company here today' what he meant was, the Tyrell F1 team were there, complete with Ken Tyrell and Francois Cevert (who appears at the end of that video with JS). There was no protocols, you just went on track as you wanted. So there I was flat out, in my Mini with the current Tyrell F1 car and driver going past like you wouldn't believe. :-D :-D

It is indeed - I used to work at Silverstone in those days (early 70's) and we/they would get to drive around the circuit the night before the grand prix on ther way back from the pub. They had to stop it in the end because some people were going clickwise and others anti-clockwise ... with obvious resulting carnage

There was an episode of Top Gear, where he took Richard May (?) round a circuit in a TVR and then 'coaching' the presenter until he was within 20 secs or so of Jackie's time. Lovely to watch :-D
He's also someone who's put a lot back into motorsport and a great advocate of safety, which made him quite unpopular at the time. But considering the toll on driver's lives in those days, his efforts were well rewarded by the progressive reduction in fatalities.
