Well, what a day !!!

Arriving at Mocom Racing at 8.30 am armed with all the bits and a schedule of what needed doing we set to work (well, I say we, but it was really Zak and Lee ... I watched :) )

The main objectives were:
- fit Milltek Sport decat system
- fit gauges for boost, air charge, oil temp & oil pressure
- fit colder plugs (iridium 7 rather than the 6 standards)
- adjust mapping to suit the exhaust and reflecting the new knowledge of the information from the gauges

To say we encountered problems was a understatement !!

Anyone that knows the procedure to change plugs on a scooby would not be suprised to see half of the engine bay contents on the workshop floor and an hour later a spark plug appears. To our great suprise, the plug length on these is different to all other subaru 2.0 and indeed Zak's own 2.5 block. The plugs in mine are about 1 cm longer and the hunt for stock of these ensued. An hour later and nowhere had stock of the plugs so re-assembling took place.... gutting. Without these plugs, the full mapping couldnt take place :(

I wont go into all the other details but suffice to say that Zak and Lee worked well and eventually everything was back together and it was time to fire her up.... lovely sounds pulsed from the Milltek system - not too loud but definitely purposeful  If anyone saw the Type 25 on 5th Gear, this is essentially the same system give or take some ceramic coating on the downpipe on theirs (mine is heat wrapped) and theirs has a sports cat.

The final kick in the goolies was a laptop that refused to then connect to my ECU in order to commence some basic adjustments to the maps to account for the free flowing system - you have got to love Bill Gates and his emporium :x . About another hour was taken trying to get to the root cause of this until we eventually settled on going out for a drive to check for knock and measuring with a wide band Innovate system. We would have to leave the mapping for another day where we could do the plugs aswell for good luck.

Early on in this, it was blatantly clear that the turbo would be overboosting if I were to try and drive normally - we recorded 1.44 bar on a half throttle 3rd gear pull to 4000 :o .... a delicate touch was going to be needed to get home with an engine in one piece !

I would like to thank Zak for the work done - totally professional, great installations and as ever, great advice.

Heres to Friday when I can finally put my foot down :D

Just so incredibly frustrating for Zak and me - it just wanted to rev and boost. The spool up is simply incredible now (feels like it is instant!!) but needs serious reigning in to protect the engine.

I could seriously see it fly up to 1.8 bar without too much trouble apart from bits of piston flying out of the block :(

A lesson for anyone with a newage ... DO NOT DECAT WITHOUT MAPPING !!!

Will be driving Miss Daisy tonight to the meet but come friday pm  - fingers crossed.

And I thought the spark plugs in the Rex were a nightmare to change !!!

Unlucky mate, have been through this myself when I went to get mine mapped and I had a turbo problem !!!

At least we can hear the sound difference tonight.

Look forward to hearing about the difference when it is mapped.

Mate, I know how you felt - when I had my first wheel off to fit it - would you beleive it that the bolt holes are too small for a normal socket set / tyre brace .... hence I guess why volks have a special bolt set !! ... but magically a spark plug socket from the neighbours set worked.

It's going to be very hard to be good mate - ask gareth he had to run his engine in for 2000 miles or so .... so for the first few months he never knew what boost was :).

So does it now sound different? .. louder? or you won't be able to tell until you can have the mapping completed.

Suprised this is the only comment made by you Ben about my driving lol

Just one quick question Dunk, is your car a 2.5 litre ? or a 2.0 litre ?

Sounds more purposeful -

- deeper rumble at tickover but too loud as to wake the dead.
- cruising wise there is a little boom but nothing too bad and certainly not enough to worry about
- on load though....it is simply awesome, well it was for the 2 seconds that I had it on full load before the boost gauge started reading warp factor 12...

Having seen how quickly the boost figures fly up, I have no choice than to drive it on tiptoes.

So with these mods and when the mapping is completed - what are you expecting the output to be?.

hmmm... It should see the sexy side of 360 bhp and 380lb/ft with a following wind :D but it may be more... or less :)
