Noise Reduction - advice

OK, so let me ask.... My mother is an opera singer, and I'm currently digitising a lot of old tape recordings from the mid eighties.

Now, there's a lot of hiss, as you might expect, and whilst I have a Nakamichi with (I assume) good Dolby capabilities, I wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to the digital post-processing possibilities?

Any sound recorders out there?

Cheers,

James

Are you doing this post production on a PC?

If so what software are you using?

Well, that's the point.

Am I better off doing NR in analogue on the tape deck or in post-production on the PC. My head tells me the latter as I can experiment ad infinitum.

WHat software? Well, that's the point, I dunno! I got something called AUdiotools (Shareware)< but the NR stuff added lots of oddness to the music.

So, suggestions? I'll even share the music - some of it is superb.
