Francis,
There is every point in doing it the way i say. Unless they have the car so they can bolt the flange to the centre pipe and tack the rear pipe on it will be very difficult to get it lined up properly. If it is slightly out of line at the flange it will be loads out at the tail. Only trying to share my expertise with you mate.

I understand where you're coming from Eddy, no worries mate i am listening and yes ordinarily i would agree with what you're saying
however....
.....What i forgot to mention is i am taking the center pipe with me as well for them to match it all up to so it will be nice and accurate when it comes to fitting time. In any case if it were me doing it i would be marking out on the pipe itself where the topmost flange hole sits before i remove the old flange. It's a very straightforward process using something as simple as a metal ruler and a scribe. It's not rocket science!!
I'd have said that was par for the course wherever i take the exhaust and a fairly basic procedure for making sure the angle of the flange holes is exactly as per the original. If an exhaust fabricator doesn't do that sort of very basic marking out beforehand then he won't be doing it. Surely you might only need the car if you were making an exhaust section from scratch.
If i had a Mig Welder and a block of SS i would be doing it myself as i don't believe in farming something out unless i really cannot do it myself, unfortunately on this occasion i don't have a mig welder or block of SS.

Francis,
You still don't get it do ya ](*,) lol
My comments were still assuming you were taking the centre pipe. How are they going to know how exactly the exhaust lays on the mounts and around the suspension and out the back valence? A small amount out in any direction will throw it all out at the back. I still say my way is best :duel:
I understand your problem though. Good luck anyway mate

Like i said...if i had the bits to do it myself i would have done it by now.
I still hear where you are coming from, i understand what you are saying....and i don't see a problem based upon what i have said either.
Your way isn't best, it's just the only one you know :P :poke:
More than one way to skin a cat
I don't see a need to weld on a flange to the existing flange of my backbox and i don't want it sticking out the back an extra half inch or so as then the rubber mounting points on the backbox will be stressed more than they need to be or i end up having to bend the metal mounting point bracket to accomodate.
We'll see how it turns out

Francis,
Of course this isn't the way i would do it myself. I would put the new centre pipe on with the new loose flange, with a short stub of pipe welded to it to act as a reducer, bolted to it and then tack your old backbox less its flange to it on the car and then take it off and weld it all round.
The way i have advised you to do it is to try to ensure it all lines up ok untill you get a new backbox mate.
If the flange is on the slightest bit crooked it will throw all your mounting out at the back, which is alot worse that it being half an inch back but in line.
The exhaust place should be able to advise.

I'll be speaking with them this morning.
If it turns out your way is the way they will do it then i will be bowing down to your wisdom and licking your shoes, begging for mercy in extreme humility and calling you Exhaustmaster. I don't plan on changing the exhaust anytime soon though as this is meant to be a permanent solution. :notworthy:
However....don't hold your breath and no i don't have a shoe fetish but i do know when to bow down gracefully. If you're right i owe you a decent size order

Well finally sorted.
I'm having a flange made from mild steel by a local engineering firm as a block of stainless steel was silly money from a metal merchant and as Eddy pointed out to me earlier on the phone the mild steel flange won't need so much heat for the weld to penetrate it therefore minimising the chances of blowing a hole through the exhaust itself.
Nice one Eddy......but i'm not licking your shoes
Zen Performance will be cutting off the old flange and mig welding the new flange on. Top marks to them for coming through on that one.
I must admit they are becoming top of my list for anything that needs doing that i cannot do myself.
Job done!! :thumb:
