For that sort of money there are lots of other very nice cars chap - how about an M3 for example.

An M3 is going to be expensive to run. The thinking with the Fiesta is small, fun and relatively cheap to insure and run.
I've thought of things like Clio 172, 182 or Mini Cooper S but keep going back to the idea of a trusty old Ford as I've had plenty of them in the past.
I have thought about a Focus ST 2 or 3. 2.5ltr turbo 225bhp. Trouble is they start around the

Go for a Fiesta mate, you've wanted one for a while.
The first one is a nice one, good spec and mileage. I know we had a lot down here nicked for parts due to the race series. Now they've been superseded, not so much of a problem.
I really like the Clio's too, but I know what you mean about the "Ford" thing.
The Focus STs are much more money, so will have been thrashed for more miles.
17k is nothing really, enough to have plenty of life left in it.
