GTi Spring Festival @ Santa Pod

Report and photos

Tk and I decided a while ago that we would attend this event, the first major event of the UK's very busy season for anything VW related. The idea of getting both 16 valves out for a spring blast to the legendary two lane 'strip' was too much to resist. Without focusing on the negatives, mine didn't prove to be finished in time so we met at Cambridge services and made the rest of the trip in Trev's fine example of the mark 2.

With the BBS RS rims freshly adorned with wider dish and R888's on for good measure the stance was a bit 'full' :)

Rude!

Anyway, we met up with the guys (by chance) from the DubGen forum and the collective made their way to Podington. The queue's were huge with hundreds of fettled cars all patiently waiting to get in.

Within about half an hour, we had made our way into the club area only to find that the organisers had not allocated the correct amount for DubGen, so the forty plus people had to make do with ten spots instead! A good start, but the rest of us parked locally enough and got on with it.

Trev and I made our way to the auto jumble, keen to search out a bargain. I thought this was a fantastic idea and we were amongst a huge swell of people all looking for that rare or cheap part. Alloys, seats, stereos....panels too. I could have spent a small fortune but that kind of defeats the point of the car, so I decided to keep my cash out of the way :)

The strip was quite busy; a mix of tuned road cars, the odd shed and some proper race cars were all making steady progress up and down the strip. 200+ cars in total ranging from a 9 second 144mph mark 1 Golf to a truely dreadful diesel thing that rocked a 20 second run and a staggering 67mph :driving:

The standard of the cars overall was immense. Great variety and some real creativity shown too.........almost like a hot rod element to some of the ways that the VW scene do their thing.

No idea what this is, other than hugely entertaining and bloody good at launching :D

At one point, this was outdragging a turbocharged mark 2.

A very hard driven 20v turbocharged mark 2

I had to prize Trev away from this. Less than 700kgs, caged and running a turbocharged engine :)

More very amusing styling

15" wheels with 17" hub caps! Trev and I both had a giggle about this one.

With a motorsports exhaust 'trim'. Gives you wings ;)

One of the nicest cars there (among many fine cars)

One of the scabbiest, most poorly prepped cars of the day

It did run some obscene terminals though (120mph+)

The one below is run by Sub11motorsport.com, namely James Hodson. Quick doesn't quite cover it with 10 second passes from a front wheel drive car.

I liked this sticker and it summed up the fun factor missing from some car events

So there we are. A great day out and a totally different feel to the sort of thing that I've attended in years, simply years.

Roll on the Summer. I should have the Golf back by next weekend, just in time for our meet. With Trev, Ben and I all rolling around in Golf's it should be fun
