2006- A year in motion

Post by Stuart »

At this time of year, many of us oldies reflect on the year that has passed, the good times and the bad. I thought, being a narcisist, that I would bore the hell out of anyone that doesn't have anyting better to do with their time than read my anecdotal ramblings.

January
A quiet start to the year really. A rolling road day at Engine Advantages was R32 GTR Skylines take first, second and third in the Scoobycity dyno day  My how I laughed.......... My car was still sporting the stickers that lasted all of six weeks before chucked in the bin. To help, a dodgy boost controller (that's my excuse) meant a result of only 343bhp at the fly.

A good laugh all in all and a nice start to the year.

February
For me the trackday in February was the culmination of literally hundreds of emails, PM's and phone calls. This was my first trackday where I had sold every place, every single one :) For those that were there, we enjoyed a memorable day. The most varied weather meant we experienced frost, hail, showers and bright sunshine later on. Some cracking cars we there and this proved to be one of the best days out of the year. Bubble, dynamix, R32 Nik, murano3, Madenglishman, Gary at APT and loads of others joined us for an absolute belter of a day. I was really fortunate that I had both cars there, so I could do five laps in the GTR, then come in to cool down, set the turbo timer, and go straight back out in the Sierra for another 8 laps or so. I did 193 miles that day and even went over the 100k mark mileage wise absolutely flat out in the Sierra on the back straight. Heres some snaps from the day.

What a great day out that was (seeing these pictures again makes me look forward to the day in February even more)

March, April and May

A period of abstention from anything other than saving the business. Some very hard decisions to face and no way I could justify money on being a big kid. Time to get my head down for a while.

June

June signalled the arrival of Japshow and that meant it was about time I got a 12 second run. I know 12 seconds is nothing special but I'm a pussy on the quarter mile and my paddle clutch didn't help my confidence. I met up with the lads from the Skyline Owners club at Brampton Hut and embarked on the short journey from there to the Pod. My first time on a stand and my tatty old GTR looked a little incongruous next to the other cars. My first run was poop and after all of the advice from Dan, Nick etc I still only managed a 13.2. This included four wheels lit up for most of the first 60ft and missed change to third gear, not once but twice! One last attempt before I throw my teddy in the corner and retire from quarter mile stuff permanently and I thought I would just try and drive the car quickly. Worked a little better as I acheived a 12.7, still nothing special but quick enough for me.

July

I'd decided in my niaivity to have a go at drifting and I joined some of the boys from Driftworks and we jointly hired Lydd International circuit in Kent. Sounds posh but it only costs about

Nothing more that I could add to this write up Stu - been a fantastic year from the car point of view.

This time last year:

1) i had a subaru legacy estate
2) i had never done a proper track day (although had rallied and competed in motorsport of different types)
3) hadnt heard of this stuart staples chap
4) knew nothing about turbo cars

Things have moved on loads :D

1) I now drive the fastest car I have ever owned and i have loads left to do on it
2) I have driven at Snetterton, Cadwell, Honington, Silverstone and Nurburgring and loved every mile of them :D - all for different reasons
3) have a great friend that leads me astray as much as I lead him astray :thumb:
4) know a little more than nothing about my car ;)

Roll on 2007 - it will be great :)
