How did you have yours mapped?

Just out of interest, how many people here have told their tuner that their car is used on the track? The reason I ask is that a road map is often mapped differently to a car used on the track due to the long periods of high loads and associated heat soak and inherent detonation when on the track.

I did the ring, silverstone and brands since my rebuild, and after a recent check, I have a bit of det going on. This is with the stock ECU which normally over fuels rather than runs lean, so im wondering if i did the damage on the track where conditions were extreme.

I'm now nearly there with my setup, I just need to find a PFC at a reasonable price, to run the HKS 740s i've bought :D

When it comes to the map, I will be making sure I let them know how i use the car.

In Fairness,

I think you are possibly being a tad OTT.

Fair enough if you have a highly tuned car which will only ever be doing track work, then by all means get a map that is optimised for high stress conditions. However, in general terms once a car is fully mapped to whatever spec you are running it is then tweaked for road manners to ensure that there are no nasty moments when on part throttle. The full throttle stuff should pretty much dictate your outright power and be set to safe tolerances for your components.

If your current map has allowed det to occur then possibly your tuner is not aware that you take the car on track - requiring a greater safety zone in effect - or possibly sailing too close to the wind with regards to det and A/F in order to chase numbers. If you think about it for a moment, the dyno is the harshest environment of all for the engine with the least airflow, the highest likelihood of heat soak and heat pockets and the most amount of time on throttle if your tuner requires it (load testing).

I notice that you say you are running a stock ECU, you have had a rebuild and you are "nearly there" with your spec. Does this mean you were assuming that just because your standard ECU used to run a bit rich on a standard engine that you have since added some more performance orientated parts (which are usually geared for more airflow and therefore leaner conditions) and figured that it would all balance out, as if thats the case then you can hardly be surprised if det is the result !!

we used to map on the road all the time but since having the dyno it has allowed us to tune cars alot better nowing what works and what doesnt.

we still also give cars a road test after to make sure every thing is nice from a driveability point ,also checking for det which normally be fine after using the dyno

Well, I was running stock turbo, EBC was off, so just an fmic, 3" straight through, so nothing too out of the ordinary. I was wrong in presuming about the ECU, but using the knock monitor on my SAFC (no adjustments made), knock was rare, mainly single figures. On the track I stupidly didnt keep my eye on the figure so im not totally sure if that was the cause, but pretty sure?

I'm still learning alot about running lean etc so thanks for your post, lots to learn.

No worries.

Replaing the exhaust system AND elbows on GTR's has a tendency to make them boost creep alot so its easy to assume that simple mods wont have any other effects !!

Mine was mapped on the road with det/cans wideband AFR sensor and full datalogging. Zak from Mocom mapped mine and is fully aware of my driving style and preferences and mapped to suit what I would be using the car for and even gave advice on how to get the best results from it within safe limits.

I also log all track runs to make sure that all running sweet.

Having said that I do not rev the nuts off my car and with the new gauges for boost, charge temps and opil temp/pressure I can keep a spare eye on the vital signs.

I would thoroughly recommend having a good working relationship with your mapper so that they know you and your car.... whomever it may be and wherever it is mapped. Some people swear by mapping on rollers, some on the road. I guess that the results are what matters and how it drives and performs in the real world.

im using the standard 1989 ecu, but with the ignition timing advanced 5 degrees throughout the entire rev range courtesy of the distributor being fiddled with :)
