Exhausts - loud or quiet ?

Post by RX7 »

Hi Chaps,

After finding a small hole in my exhast (catback) I need to get a new one.

Been looking on the internet and there only seems to be 'ear bleeding' loud or 'muffled quiet' ones.

I want something with a bit of grunt but not too much to annoy the whole of the neighbourhood.

So far I have read Blitz Nurspecs and Apexi N1s are very loud with Greddy Power Extreme also.

The Racing Beat (rotary company) ones are quiet but loud under acceleration.

Just cant decide, has to be a large single pipe though....I think I want loud lol

What do you guys have ? I know the Rotary Engine is different than the Piston Engine in terms of exhaust sound but interested in types people have gone for.

Any of you got really loud exausts ? Are they 'liveable' with ?

I have an HKS downpipe (3 inch pipework) and silenced decat (also 3 in) for reference.

My scoob has what I've been told is a "disgraceful" exhaust note (thanks again Stu  ).

It is undoubtedly loud, but never harsh. I've done a round trip to Elvington and back to Suffolk in a day with no trouble whatsoever, still had my hearing when I got home!

It's a Cobra 5" tailpipe on a 6" can, running on 3" pipework from the turbo back. Neil and Steve at LPS in Martlesham Heath fabricated it for me, and I can't recommend it highly enough. 8)

Exhausts...........one of my favourite subjects

I have a Kakimoto rear section, fully decat, 4" bore with Trust downpipes. My car is about as loud as I'd want it for day to day stuff, being just about bearable on the trip to the Ring. The thing to consider as well as outright volume is the pitch and tone of the thing too.

Status.................................... volume inside ..........................................................volume outside
Tickover................................................nice and throaty...................................................................pretty damned loud

off boost................................................loud+mild booming...............................................................pretty damned loud

on boost................................................very loud, roars like...............................................................like a jet fighter

If I'm honest I think I would swap for something like Bens or Dans as they are sporty at idle and off boost but sound great on boost. I am seriously considering a titanium one when funds allow, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Whats the benefit of a Titanium one ?

The Greddy Ti one is recommended a lot for RX7s on the American RX forum. Quite a bit more money though.

Ok mate, where's good to buy from ?

Gonna ring around tomorrow for prices and some advice.

Was trying the RX specialist companies, whifbitz, tdi-plc.

Anywhere you can recommend ?

Do any of our on board suppliers get stuff like exhausts ?

I am sure we will be able to get a deal set up if none of the existing can supply.

Find what you want and let us know - we will set up the deal :D
