Running rich.

Post by 323ian »

I am currently running the stock GTR twins on my car at 0.9 bar.
I have an abbey 1 bar chip in my ecu but my car is running very very rich.
When i put my foot down i have black smoke pouring out the car and the MPG is truly shocking, i fear i am doing damage to my engine, am I?
I know the solution will be a Apexi PFC or similar but I dont have the money for this at this point in time so is there anything i can do in the short term and am i doing any damage?
Cheers.

i'm guessing partly due to you running only 0.9 bar won't help as the chip is for 1 bar?? i maybe wrong but then in saying that i take it your all round running is rich, i take it you don't have a afr gauge or wideband o2 sensor etc that would help you check the afrs exactly (well closeish as no afr guage sensor is that acurate) maybe you have a o2 sensor on it's way out maybe pull it out and give it a clean and while it's out measure the voltage across it and that will tell you wether that may be the problem as a dud or old o2 sensor can affect afrs well it did on mine.

First thing check for boost leaks obviously if your lossing air after the afms you'll still get the fuel for the air the engines not getting.

have you run an ecu diagnostic, any fault codes.

oh and damage wise one thing will be bore wash which means the cylinder bores will be lacking lube risking rings and bore surface damage.

you could use a apexi safc just to trim the chip you have at mo,

power fc would be best option

Thanks very much for all the advice.
Yes the chip is for 1 bar but i run it at 0.95 bar but thats just me being safe.
As for boost leaks wouldnt the car be very jerky to drive? I had a 323gtr mazda before and when that got a boost leak it was undriveable and it was a pin prick size hole.

I have got a wideband AFR gauge which is plumbed in but without being able to drive my car at the moment i would not be able to give you guys an accurate figure of what it is running.

What should it be running when im cruising and what should it be running when i have my foot down? I am good with a set of spanners but not so good with figures and electronics!!

How do i run an ecu diagnosis without taking it to nissan, is there a set way of checking flashing lights like a lot of cars?

Thanks for the advice, i think a PFC is on the cards while still running the stock twins, only trouble with that is the mapping costs.

Ian - when you turn it up to 1bar - is it still running rich?

Its just the same Duncan, I would not have thought that 0.05 of a bar would make much odds and i only run it low for safety on the turbos.

I have aftermarket Apexi BOV's on the car as well.
