passat fuel pump loose

afternoon.
I've had the Passat estate now for about 2 months and its always had a petrol vapour smell when driven with the windows open, so today I thought I would try to trace it.
started first with the in tank pump. checked by lifting up the boot floor first..aha..looks like the access plate has been removed recently or often as the plastic lugs are snapped and screws missing!
so I remove the plate and what do I see-the pump just sitting loosely in the top of the tank! the locating ring sitting on top of it.
after some fiddling and faffing it seems now secure, but should I be concerned? as I said before the access plate and cover appear to have been removed on several occasions. or should I just check it in a few days time again? thoughts?
