Just need a bit of info guys.


What to look for when buying a "P" reg 2.0 l golf Gti?

Is it mark II?

Any info welcome.

that will be a mk3 nik, the 16v ones are ok the 8v ones are pretty poor on performance in the mk3 8v are around 115ish bhp and 16v are 150bhp

I had a P reg mk3, which is the one that my brother now owns. Tough, cheap, much more refined to drive than a mk2 but heavier.

It will go through nearly everything I think.
They are as Stu says, solid, practical (especially if you get a 5 door like mine) and cheap to run.
I would nt bother with an 8v if your going to try and have some fun in it, unless you plan an engine swap. Cheaper really to get a 16v from the off. And don't worry too much about mileage, service history is far more important. (Mines going to click over to 150k this week, and it's as good as gold, as long as you remember it's an older high mileage car)
I get about 30-40 to the gallon, and parts are cheap. Good luck and keep us posted

Nik, get a MKII - cheaper parts and potential investment with the values going up.

On the flip side Ben, Mk2 Gti's fetch more than Mk3's, and if you need to use it for kiddie duties, Mk3's are way better.

Cheers for the replies guys. It is a 3 door and it would be purely for fun. :D it is more my brothers toy but I would get the use of it whenever I wanted and as he lives in London I dare say that I will probably use it more than he does. Is it easy to tell whether it is a 16v or 8v? Sorry for the inane questions but I have never really looked into golfs before.

Yes , the redline on the 16v is 6800, the 8v is lower. The engine bay will have a full injection plenum coming over the top of the engine, like this

There are other differences, but these are the most obvious.
You will have some fun even if it is an 8v, but the limit after cams and hedwork, fuelling etc is still about 140bhp, although lots have been turboed. I'd stick with sorting the suspension and brakes first, either model!

Good luck, they are pointy little cars after the bigger stuff most of us drive these days, there is fun to be had with this cheap stuff!

the bottom pic is a mk4 engine i think isnt it possibly a 1.8t , but yeah as rob said the 16v will have an inlet over the top of the head with DOHC 16V written on it :D
