Intercooler Swap

Probably a stupid question but I'll ask anyway...
Having an ancient (93) scoob with the tiny slanty intercooler I think I really should look at upgrading it to a bigger one.
I did manage to get a later classic one to try and fit but that looks like it's either a take a hammer to the bulkhead job or shorten the tubes on the intercooler/throttlebody by 5-10mm to make it fit that way.
Question is though, wouldn't it be easier for me to just get a later manifold setup and just swap the whole lot over?
Or am I then going to run into problems of the manifold not lining up with the heads properly etc?
Don't really want to swap to a FMIC unless I have to as a lot of my driving is in town and shielding the needed induction kit from the heat of the engine is a right pain to get right.

Later, i.e, phase 1.5, won't fit the studs.
Easy answer is bet a front mount, they're silly cheap atm.
Induction can go into the inner wing or use the Pipercross thingy with ducting to fog light cover.

Thanks Gerry,
I had a feeling it would be something like that but thought I'd ask anyway.

ph1.5 (V3&4 cars) is ideantical fit to your head set-up, its the later 99/00> (V5&6) that were totally wrong..............
the issue you will have is with the throttle pos switch i'm led to believe as it works "backwards"......
you can make a 3/4 i/cooler fit but involves trimming the th.body pipe and i/cooler entry down and cutting/plating the O.E d/valve pipe off.........

For the hassle involved in upgrading a V1/2 Intercooler to a bigger TMIC you're better off fitting an FMIC. Some classic owners i know have fitted a newage WRX or STi TMIC without too much hassle but still involves much faffing about.
Go for an FMIC. Looks good too

no way you'd get a new-age STi i/coller on a V1/2 car without cutting out the bulkhead..........
they do fit (and work ery well) on v5/6 cars

Last year I sold on eBay my old WRX intercooler to a chap with a V1. He came to collect and we tried the intercooler just to see how tight a fit it was and i have to say it looked like it would sit behind the throttle body without at first glance looking like it needed the bulkhead rearranging.
I'm not saying you're wrong but there didn't look to be any major work to fit it.
This is a pic of a 93-96 classic, off a scoobynet thread, fitted with a newage WRX TMIC and no bulkhead mods.

you might just get a new WRX one in (but it would be tight, however i mentioned specifically the new-age STi one as you had referrred to it in your post..........
i wouldn't want someone to spend their hard-earned and then realise it would never fit

It is tight but the photo proves that it's very doable.
A newage STi TMIC is only 10mm deeper than a WRX but its the same same length and breadth so baring in mind the photo, and there's nothing immediately close to the bottom of the intercooler, depth shouldn't make a difference. It should just fit without remodelling the bulkhead same as the WRX TMIC.

Ta Guys,
Looking at that photo, I have a feeling the inlet(s) have been trimmed a bit.
I'm taking mine into work next week and one of the guys there is going to trim it a little bit for me to make fitting just that little bit easier.
I'll probably end up going FMIC at some stage but since I have this sitting here we might as well have a play at fitting it.
