WRX turbo Boost Charateristic

Looking for advice so that I dont pull out what remains of my hair.

I have a WRX which is ftted with a TDO 5 turbo and makes arround 300bhp, I have had the car since February this year but have not been able to use it as often as I would like: the problem I have is that the turbo does not come onto full boost of 1.2-1.3 bar untilthe engine is turning over at 4-4500 rpm the boost remains steady right p to the redline in intermediate gears. (Obviously cant test this on 4th and 5th on the road)

This makes for civilised road use but I would like a little more boost lower down the rev range when using it on track or sprints.

Is this an inherant charateristic of this turbo or can the boost be changed by playing tunes with the ecu in which case is it possible to have an adjustable set up that would give me the best of both worlds.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received

At what revs does it reach 1.0bar? My standard-turbo '95 WRX didn't feel peaky particularly, although my current STi6 with VF28 turbo does spin up earlier.

What ecu does it run?

My old 95 WRX sounded similari, it had a piggy back chip (ScoobyECU) like the ESL board and due to the turbo much below 3.5k rpm it was dead as a dodo, then came in with a nice punch, just had to learn to keep it on boost.

Anyway Harry, when your Sprinting you shouldn't be below 4.5k!!!! Keep your foot down, the limiter is there for a reason!!

Thanks for the "Sprint" advice Logan clearly that is what I have been doing wrong

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice I was also guided to a thread put up by Scoobie WRX in the Engine & Transmission section so I have a bit of work to do tomorrow and hope to get it sorted for the trackday on 21/11/09

Should be spooling before 4.5K and don't listen to Logan's sprint technique. He's forgotten how to drive a Scooby. :D

To achieve 1.2 - 1.3 bar there must be some sort of boost controller so it may be worth looking at that first.

Really, when I had mine, what were your times compared to mine then???!!??

Harry - Gerry is correct though, a boost controller may help the car spool better. Depending on what you have on there at the moment.

Thanks Gerry, Logan, I think I have a standard boost controller (I assume this is the device mounted to the left hand side of the engine bay with electrical and vacuum connections) I also have a piggy-backed ecu with a vacuum connection to the dump valve and inlet manifold. I suppose that I should really get the car tested so that I have a base line and then look at a re-map ready for next year.

Still on th eplus side there is benefit in having a more docile boost profile during the winter months.

As for next years sprint series I would even try driving at max rpm if it meant I would break my duck but I somehow think that this would be beyond my capabilities but maybe later in the season who knows

I had a similar problem with my old Andy Forrest hybrid, Boost was coming in late and had a serious flat spot. I replaced the standard two port boost soleniod with a Prodrive three port and it helped a bit, but was still problematic to get the right map. I finally took it to Gary@APT who fitted a Gizzmo EBC and then had it mapped again by Dunk and all my problems vanished. Real good bit of kit and also has 4 boost settings :coolgleamA:

Thanks Micared, I really will have to take some positive action ready for next year trackdays and sprints but will probably leave things as they are for 21st as it will probably be wet and cold but thanks again fore the advice
