do floating discs usually rattle around when going over bumps?

they do when they as worn as yours!!

ah yeh i see now, the disc is too thin to make contact with the pad when the pedal isnt pushed down, so nothing stopping it rattling about on the bell.

All sounds a bit iffy

no the discs are thin cause they worn out

the noise is something different

the alloy bell move against a steel disc so after a long time of moving it wears therefore making more of a gap

new ones wouldnt make as much noise
