Fuel swirl pot?

with my escort I use a baffled fuel tank but the car seems to suffer from lack of fuel sometimes on cornering when the tanks low. Would a fuel swirl pot fix this? I'll be honest I don't really understand how to fit one etc thanks for any help/advice

A swirl pot will allow you to run with a lower fuel level. It does this by acting as a fuel reservoire which, because of it's deep, narrow construction, is less affected by cornering forces unlike the wide shallow OE fuel tank. With the OE tank, cornering with a low fuel level can force the fuel away from the pump pick up and lead to fuel starvation, det. etc.
The idea is that the existing pump supplies a sealed pot of 1 - 1.5L capacity. This pot feeds an additional pump that now supplies the fuel rail with the existing pressure reg, the excess fuel (after the reg) returns to the swirl pot. Excess fuel is returned to the fuel tank.
So you need:
1 1 - 1.5L Swirl pot with four connections of the same size as the existing fuel line.
Connections:
1 connection in the side for fuel supply from existing fuel tank/pump.
1 connection in the top or high point for excess fuel to be returned to tank.
1 connection to new (filter) pump from the bottom or low point of the pot.
1 connection in the side of the pot for return from fuel rails via reg.
1 suitable fuel pump.
1 (possibly but your choice) suitable additional fuel filter.
Decide where you can mount this new set up and obtain sufficient hosing, clips, etc. Quite straightforward but it should have a fire proof bulkhead between the passenger compartment so it should go in the boot or, as I did with the Scooby wagon, fit it under the bonnet.
Be aware that the extra pump and circulation through the engine compartment will increase the fuel temp which is undesirable. If it's an issue, you could also consider fitting a fuel cooler, which again, is simple enough to do.

great, i don't think i can run an internal fuel pump so would i be able to run another external? also does it matter what pump i use to the pot or would it have to be similar to my current one?

You only need a low pressure lift pump for the supply to the pot, so long as it can supply sufficient volume of fuel. The pot to fuel rails is the 'pressure' pump depending on whether your Escort has injection or carbs. Probably the easy way and to be sure that nothing affects the fuelling pressure, is get a new pump for the tank to pot supply and use the existing external pump for the pot to rails supply.

ok, thanks very much. would you know why from the fuel rail it goes to the pot rather than just back to the tank?

Because, if you return straight to the tank and the tank pump suffers fuel starvation, as you're taking a corner, you've defeated the purpose of the swirl pot.
Plus, it ensures the pot is full and ready at all times.
