currently running

pro race 1.2 et 38 205/40/17" r888 which need replacing asap

not sure which way to go -I am getting quite a lot of wheel spin out of slow corners.

replace with the same as I can't go larger in 17"?

or go to 16" 1.2 wheels et 35

and run 225/45/16" either r888 or dunlop dzo2

Do you think these will give any gains on track or would I be wasting money?

lastly r888's or dzo2 hard compound?

cheers
Scott

Can't answer your question directly but, on my classic Impreza, I went from 205/50/16 to the newage wheel & tyre 225/45/17.

The larger footprint of the 225 made a big difference particularly noticeable under braking as the ABS was suddenly redundant. The extra grip of the tyres stopped the brakes locking. This was with Bridgestone RE040 a very hard tyre so it wasn't the stickiness, just the size that helped. Same brake set-up, Subaru 4 pots.

Another option may be to look at the front diff Scott. Have you got one yet? If not, save the money on the wheels and get one of those instead. 205 or 225's should both be ample if they are in good nick (in R888, the Dunlops should be better if anything)

Hope you don't mind the alternative thinking

no always good to get other peoples opinion

I do already have a torsion diff -could go to quaife diff but its more money than tyres -not sure it would be much better

I have a lower final drive to fit once my gearbox finally gives up -which should make it better on track as I might be able to use 3rd gear instead of 2nd gear on some bends.
Will also make more use of 5th gear.

tbh I will only buy the 16" wheels if I can sell my existing wheels for sensible money or I will have to go without the car for a month or so.

I was thinking with 225's

positives should be :
better grip
better ride as 45 profile and less weight/area
less likely to over heat them?
toyo's -likely to be new rubber (dunlops -pos old rubber)

negatives

maybe a bit of extra roll being 45's
wet grip?
won't look as good with 16's -not really worried with this though as long as it goes quicker lol
