Might look at getting some wider tyres is anyone running 225's or 235's on 7" wide rims?
hopefully could give a bit more grip if they fit!

Putting wide tyres on small rims will just give you side wall flex and distort the tyre under heavy cornering.
Stick with the right size tyre for the rim and get the best tyre you can get mate.
Short of that get a rim with bigger inset or offset depending on where you have room. You can then increase the tyre size properly.

It depends on which model tyres as well as size. I have 4 different widths of tyres in my garare, all claiming to be 225/45/17 but the AO48s are over n inch wider in real measurements than a set of contis.

The 225 bit refers to the width of the tread pattern The 45 is a percentage of that irrc for the side wall height, but it is defo for the Tread not the width of tyre!!!
With something like the tyres some of us run there is an area on the outer tread of the tyre that is effectively slick and does not therefore form part of the calculation.
I would tend to agree with above that 225 would be the max but 205 the optimum for handling.

from the chart it looks like if you have a 40 profile the rim has to be a lot wider than if you run a 45 or 50 profile.
I think I might stick with 205/40/17" otherwise my only other option is to buy 16" wheels and go 225/45/16
cheers
