Shortly after the start of tonights track day at snetterton, 3rd gear went missing on my Silvia. I knew it was already getting a bit old and tired, but it finaly bought it. Having done almost nothing technical with the powertrain since I bought the car I know very little about the Nissan box that they strap to the back of SR20s, so need some advice.
The obvious cheap choice is to find another 2nd hand box and simply fit and hope the gears stay around a little longer, but having heard a few people say that the box isnt that strong or quick to start with, are there any other options? and if so how many body parts am I going to have to sell off to get them in my car?
Making a few assumptions, my guess is that the options build up with:
1 - 2nd hand box
2 - rebuilt box
3 - Aftermarket "race/ straight cut" internals into old box
4 - Sequential box, and now be the focus of all jealousy at any track day despite lack of limbs, kidneys and probably and eyeball that you had part with to buy them.
Can anyone with a bit more JDM knowledge than than me help me with the source and cost of any of those options, or any better ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Silvia gearbox options and advice needed
Z32 Box is much stronger and can be made to fit with an adapter plate, Drifter on here made his own or Mazworks do a conversion.
As for replacing internals, you can go OS Giken or PPT I think apex supply both.
Cheapest option by far is just sling another standard SR20 box at it every time it goes pop, plenty of S14s about and come october it'll be ditch season again :-D
