front splitter question
front splitter question
Im wondering if there is a composite/carbon front splitter for the classic scoob with a flat tray out there or do I have to look to have one made? Also how much of an effect would a decent one have on front downforce? Im thinking of swapping the rear sti spoiler for a single adjustable spoiler in conjunction with the front splitter and wondered if they have a serious effect on the cars handling or are they mainly just for show?
Dunc the tuition is coming and your advice is recieved loud and clear and is greatly appreciated. I know how much I need some training and when I can fit it in ( no hols left etc ) I'll be investing in some more. Im still trying to put into practice the last lot of advice I gto from my donnington day.
I know its wasted on me now but the cars a longterm thing and I want to try and improve the cars handling as I still had a fair amount of understeer at the last sprint im hoping the lower braces and t pieces will help and Ive tightened the car up now and am squirilling away some extra money for some kw' v3's.
In the mean time Ive been meaning to add our mark to the car (no offence neil) and id been thinking for sometimeabout poss changing the rear spoiler. If im going to do it I'd like to do it right and also add some extra handling tuning to the car if poss.
So in a nutshell ive some money pegged away fro my sprinting costs plus some new alloys (looking for a set of secondhans ones), some to go towards the kw's for next year, some for td's (this will now be used for driver training instead). The rest of the car fund is staying in my ISA for a rainy day with poss a litle bit going towards changing the look of the car.

Totally agree with all of that....duncan wrote:Have you had the geometry set up on it ?
What tyre pressures do you run front and rear?
What types of corners is it understeering in, how fast are you entering the corners versus how fast exiting?
These would be my starting points for solving the understeer.
Set up counts for a lot.
I never had a front splitter or underpan and after some driver training, suffered very little under steer.
You can get the car turn in if set up properly and driven properly.
The additional bits just add fractions of seconds.
Take regular exercise, walk to you car!
Geometry is set for very mild oversteer, not really had to many issues until the sprint on the last switchback where turn in was fine but just struggled to put the power down from quite low speed without understeering towards the far side of the corner . tyre pressures were constant front and back. The corner to be fair had most people struggling.
Ive attached a couple of photo's of the car during the last round not sure if they will give you an insight into the cars handling and my driving.

Adjusting the koni's if you know what your doing is probably quite simple but in my case I've like so many other things on the car left them alone. Its one reason why I want some proper adjustable suspension that have defined settings.
Thanks for being patient with me guys as I know Im a numpty just trying to take in what the instructor said last time, suspension, tyre pressures and everything else.
Ive always been the same in terms of wanting to run before I can walk Im just desperate to do better in the next few rounds etc and its all dawning on me how much of a mountain ive yet to climb.
On the splitter it isnt just about improving the car do want to poss change the cars looks so any improvements would be a bonus.

from looking at the pics:
- front tyre pressures way too low
- more neg camber needed at the front
It just looks like you are carrying far too much speed into the corners and asking the tyres to do too much.
my two p's worth - I am no expert though.
When you say set up for mild oversteer - who set it and what is it set at ?
A splitter will do nothing at the speeds you are talking about there apart from be something else to replace when you hit a cone.

Dunc thanks did consider replacing the 2 pots on the rear with sti brembo's as an inexpensive rear brake set-up that'll help with me killing speed etc.
I run 28psi alround should I be upping that on the fronts? In relation to the geometry Zak set it up so I open to suggestions round my way (nottingham) for getting the geometry re-done for what the car is now used for.
If i have additonal negative camber will it affect tyre wear dramatically? Also If I do go for a set of kw's or similar can I adjust the camber settings myself so that Ive got a track/sprint set up and normal road set-up?
Trying to be smoother with what I do instead of on/off with brakes throttle etc but it aint easy. I'm probably trying too hard to be fast round and prob doing the exact opposite.

Normally with tyre pressures you aim to get to a hot pressure (you need to find the ideal out for your own car really) but doing sprints you are not going to be getting them hot at all in the short period that you are 'live' for.
More pressure = more grip (to a point) and certainly on what look like road tyres you will want more pressure to stop them folding under the car. I would almost certainly put another 6 psi (maybe more) in the fronts cold to give more bite at the front and help cure the understeer. Measure the pressures at the end of the runs to see what they are reaching.
Geometry - Zak has his own preferred settings and they may or not work for you. If you are happy with them then carry on. Zen do mine and they have never been better IMO.
