Ford KA starting problems

Hi All,
The misses KA has just started playing up and wondered if anyone on here can give some advice.
The problem is cold starting, it just turns over and over. I've got an inductive timing light and there is no spark, except occassionally single flash here and there. If you turn it over long enough it will start and as soon as it's running it's fine, but can take almost 5 minutes of turning over before starting.
My first suspicion is the crank position sensor, after that it's the distributor unit. The car is a 2002 Endura-E engine.
