Six speed 'box into a classic shape Scooby???

Post by BentMetal »

This is a question for those well up on their Scoobies.

Has anyone put a 6 speed box from a later Impreza into a classic?

If so, what else do you need and how difficult is it?

Where can I source a box from? What is the going rate? Or what do these cost new?

I want to put one in my STI V6 wagon because the synchros are on there way out.

Any help/advice will be much appreciated.

Cheers

I am pretty sure that mikeB has done this in his rather gorgeous 25B. May be worth sending him a PM and asking very nicely :)

There are quite a few of these conversions been done to good effect.

IIRC you also need the the shorter prop shaft from an auto. The complete set-up usually sells for <2K and are ~30kg heavier. They do handle a lot more torque than the 5 speed, ask Duncan :D

New synchros would be a cheaper option, or a replacement 5 speed, even less.

Cue Steven :)

I have the conversion.... just need the box, diff... and rear shafts.
Otherwise you need to ensure your current diff ratio matches the box.
Also need to have the shifter. Also needed a 6 speed to manual speedo cable converter.

Thanks guys.

Just need to track down a 2nd hand 'box, diff and shafts then! Everytime I see these, they sell in no time.

22b.com is a good place to keep your eyes on for these - they crop up every few weeks.

Good conversion to do :thumb:

6 speed box

Post by mikeb »

hello matt i did the six speed box conversion in my impreza the thing you do also need is the gear stick as it is totaly different to original also prop as is shorter. I picked up six speed box, stick, prop, rear sharfts, rear big diff, hubs, brembo rear calipers, these all came from a 2002 ra so had no dcd. paid

Thanks for that Mike.

I've bought a 6 speed from a 2003 STI. I'm not going to change the rear driveshafts, hubs, brakes etc... I'm matching it to a UK Turbo diff and I've got the stick and prop. Maybe not as good conversion as yours, but my immediate problem was to get around my knackered 5 speed - didn't want to spend money rebuilding it only for it to break again.

Maybe in the future I'll go to the bigger rear diff.

Still sounds good mate good luck make sure you got more people to help you put it in than when you take the five speed out.
