impreza gearbox linkage?

Post by evildave »

this week my gearbox seems to be getting really loose on selection, mostly going into 3rd. Is there a Nylon bush or something that could be worn? box feels ok and only done about 55k miles.

There's a nylon bush at the bottom of the gear stick but if it were that, then all gears would feel odd imo.

Perhaps checking the linkage bolt tightness at the various yolk (?) connections may help.

they do all feel a little odd, in neutral there is a lot of left to right stick movement with very little resistance, most noticeable going down into 3rd as it's the 'centre' position and requires some guiding, i'll get it up on the ramps at henstead tomorrow and check it out, cheers for the advice

Possibly lost the spring off the back of the box, which helps pull the lever back to the 3rd gate.

If you push the gearstick left or right and it stays there, it usually means the spring has gone.

Simple fix with the right spring and a pair of needle nose pliers.

The spring is missing in this pic,but it should be connect the disc on the left and a hole to the bottom right of the top linkage.

However, the phase two boxes dont always have this spring, as the centering is done internally. A sping can still help in this instance though.

The OEM spring does put quite a lot of tension on the linkage. Amazing what a little spring can do :D
