Classic STi RA track build

Post by TrackScotland »

Hello :)

I'm looking to buy a classic STi III onwards RA in the next month or so for use as a track car. I've had an impreza before so I'm aware of most of the basics.

A few questions for you...

* Are they prone to oil surge/starvation with hard track use? I plan slicks and decent suspension, so my head is saying 'yes'! Is a baffled sump a must have? Are there trap door type kits available off the shelf for decent prices.

* Stock TMIC and heat soak - how bad on track with about 400bhp? (that kinda the power I'll aim for... for now. Ebay FMIC kits ok for the price?

* Wheels - Will 9" wide 17's fit with minal arch bashing? I know 17's will go on but what is the max width/decent offset combo? Are any arch extensions available off the shelf? (i.e to trim back the metal, and flare out)

* Fuel Surge - had it in our old one, with minal track effort... so guess its a large problem. Swirl pot, external 2nd pump needed etc.

* Suspension - anti lift, drop links, ARB's yup... but what coilovers are out there that suit the car with hard track work? I've got TEIN Super Racing Circuit Master on the Skyline, but not wanting to spend that much on the Impreza.... I'm not looking for crap like TEIN flex either though. Any feedback on Whiteline coilovers? The racing spec ones with remote reservoirs?

* Weight Saving - Without going bananas on carbon body panels etc whats a realistic weight target for stripping and chopping out excess metal? (add cage, remove std door bars, parts of dash, all trim, sound deadning etc)

anything anyone else can add? Any pearls of wisdom from folk that have been there and done that? Whats not worth doing, what is?

Thanks for any replies :)

TMIC for long track use is not good.....

I run 225's x 17" but had to roll the arches

My sump is baffled...

I have a swirl pot in the rear as anything from half way down caused fuel surge.....

I run the Tein Flex with EDFC and i've never had a problem with them...

Mines going up for sale shortly if your interested.....

I 'got away' with using slicks and a standard sump on my earlier car, but am about to install GpN baffled sump now, along with catch can/separator instead of the standard breathers-to-inlet.

Hybrid FMICs from group buy section of scoobynet a better bet than ebay ones.

KW v3 or Exe-tc the suspension of choice, various cheaper kits seem to work well on track tho. Depends whether you want to use it on road as well.

Lots of stuff on weight saving for minimal cost and lots of effort, plus cage installation, in Rob Harriman's thread on SN, round-about page 35 onwards: http://bbs.scoobynet.com/projects/59186 ... print.html

Is the gravel extra Mike ? ;)

Adam - Mike's car is a good purchase - lots of the necessary stuff has already been done.

As for your original list:

- oil surge - yes, you will need a baffled sump
- fuel surge - you will need a swirl pot to solve this properly and associated extra pump and bits
- TMIC - huge issue the classic TMIC is rubbish, an FMIC is the only way
- 9 inch wide wheels - not a hope unless you roll and tub the arches.
- coilovers - Tein are okay on a classic for track only but have always been a little hard for road use on imprezas. exe-tc are good but expensive. Whiteline coilovers - I have no idea.
- weight - should get to 1150 - 1200 with no major issues

Best plan is to buy a ready built one that someone has done all the stuff to like Mike's :thumb:
