need helpful advice with car stereo

Post by BigFil »

I have fitted a new head unit with 2 amplifiers to the GMC, everything is fine until I start the engine and then I get a high pitched whine that goes up and down as you rev the engine. The power cables run separate to the RCA leads and the earths are good, power and earth for the head unit is the same as was used for the factory fitted

When the engine is not running the sound is great, I don't know much about suppressors but I understand that they do them for alternators but I thought the van would be OK as it is a 2002 model, is there any other types of suppressor I could use on the live cables for example?

Any helpful advice appreciated

thanks

I went to Halfords and Motormania and both have stopped selling suppressors as they say with modern cars they have no more call to keep them in stock

I would still say its an earth issue the earth cable for your amps wants to be the same gauge if not thicker than the power cable and don't just rely on the bolt for the contact but sand the surface down to bear metal.

Phil,
Any of these will do the trick. Some different ones there just to show you the differences in amperage, shapes, fitting and application, but any of them will do.

Use this webpage http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-ohm.htm to help you work out relevant amperage rating for the suppressors you need as they will have to be fitted to the main positive power cable of each amp and these suppressors must cope with the amount of amps you will draw otherwise you will melt them. :D

Your alternator should already have one fitted and your HT leads or coil should also be suppressed if they aren't already as they are the main culprits of electrical noise/RF interference through your sound system.

Buggers cancelled my op just a couple of days before it was due. Inconsiderate barstewards!!

Perhaps you could give me the job of tow vehicle for the Orange - I could earth it to that ( as long as it's not on fire )

I would use the Mustang but I mustn't exceed 0 miles per year or the premium would go up :-D
