Hi guys,
If you buy a 2ndhand turbo (something of the T04 variety), what should you be wary of or look out for ?
Can they be rebuilt, if so what are the costs etc ?
Cheers

For starters you want to check for any play in the main shaft and also inspect the blades for any signs of damage.
They can be repaired or rebuilt, when we bought our car the turbo had been sat in someones garage for over 6 years. We sent ours to universal turbo who for about

Gareth drives an RX7 so my money would be on a T04 probably Z or E model
Knowing what you are like Gareth, ie exacting, I would go for a new one mate. Otherwise you'll be forever worried about things and the small saving will just not be worth it.
Obviously if you know the car and the owner that the 'secondhand' turbos come from, well, that may be a different matter.

G - don't go for a GReddy TD-06 as apparently they are a bit fragile compared to the T04s. Also ball bearing turbos are nice for boost characteristics but beware of premature failure due to the heat from the rotary - simpler tech (T04S) may be better in this case
And as Stu says - buy new, you're paranoid enough as it is

Make sure you match the hot side housing for you port. If not you will create a lag monster or worse a turbo with no high end. A 60-1 is a nice spooling turbo and quite cheap. wont give mega power but shoud be good.
