decisions decisions..........

Post by duncan »

Been working out the next steps and I am at a crossroads.

Basically the choice is 4 ways:

1) Leave the engine as it is and accept that i will be down on power on the rest of the guys in Time Attack next year. Use my time, effort and money to get the car lighter and me driving better and forget the chase for power.

This may be enforced on me budget wise but is the least attractive option for obvious reasons.

2) Change the turbo for something a little bigger. This will mean that I can run it more within its efficient range and it will cause less heat in the engine. Power will be slightly higher this way but the flip side of the efficiency is that it should be less stressed.

Turbo on the top of the list now is the FP Green and will get me to the happy side of 400 and possibly 450 lb/ft torque without affecting the driveability of the car at the lower end.

This really appeals as a make-shift but I feel that I would have to budget for a new engine anyway as I would be pushing my luck on this.

3) Get a spare EJ257 and change pistons for forged items. (edit to say rods aswell) This can be done relatively cheaply and would be able to simply swap engines leaving me with my old short block to sell on and recoup some cash.

Again with the FP green, this should give me more potential from it and should get it to 450 bhp and nearly 500 lb/ft. If I went with option 2 for now, the turbo could be swapped over to the new setup when the engine is built and ready to swap.

4) Bite the bullet and accept that the next step is going to be expensive and do the job properly. At present, the favourite on this route is a Brian Crower 2.71 but with a higher rev limit too so enabling a massive potential of 600 + bhp but with an even greater wall of torque to help with daily driving duties. (it will be de-tuned for road work)

Obviously money is a restriction but want views from others please :)

Clutch and other considerations will be taken care of anyway and will go for the most future proof.

Option D in my opinion. After the many, many conversations that we have had over the last few years I would say that is the only choice.

Still fun thinking about it though :D

1 or 4 gets my vote.

2 and 3 are half measures.

I think a decision has to be made about how hardcore you want to make the car to make it competitive and if it's worth the bother if money is an issue. 450bhp isn't enough in a CTR in the time attack and they weigh about 300kgs less than an impreza. Also if you go for a 600bhp beast it won't be long before you decide on buying another car for a daily driver.

Option 4 makes me go goose-pimply all over just thinking about what that would be like - money wise it is more than twice the cost of option 3 though :(

Option 3 could give up to 500bhp ish on methanol.

Option 2 if you get another engine and take time over a rebuild (cos it might go bang).... Might you need some bigger injectors?
Does it just stop at the Turbo though...manifolds and stuff?

Otherwise...go for option 4...will you be really happy if you do anything else????

Dunk,

It has to be 4 if you want to be competative, but obviously you have to be sure that you are prepared to invest this much money into it.

If not, just strip it to the bones and spend a bit on handling improvements. Then the bigger turbo. Along with the weight saving this should make a big difference and everything will be less stressed except you lol.

Is this still going to be a 'family' car though to take the girls to the ring etc.

Option 4 again, but factor in buying another car... how long can it be a daily drive aswell?

Yes, I will still want it to be a usable car but doesnt need to have absolutely impeccable manners as a spare car will be on the cards for normal drudgery.

JC - the injectors I have at present are good for 600 bhp so would be fine for all but a full out build and wild turbo/cam choice on option 4.

Option 4 would need some serious fuel system and gearbox mods too.

There is another option that is halfway between 3 and 4 that would give it the potential for the happy side of 500 bhp with some reliability without taking me into huge costs for ancilliary items.

This is fully forged crank, rods, pistons, race shells and works out about half the price of option 4.... quite attractive.

Dunc if you decide on the FP Green option give me a shout. I have a brand new unit with all FP options that I dont need.
IMO a nice option that would give you a drivable car with minimum 350whp.
