I've just loaded on another map i have been working on for a while as the weather has been a bit cooler of late and i'm very pleased with my results. The MAF reading is 212.4 max with knock correction at 11.5 which is OK for an ambient intake temp of 16C and i'm hitting boost targets too so it's all good. I'm looking forward to even colder weather for better performance. Not bad for a WRX with all cats in place :D
What do you see as engine load on that?

Max Engine Load for the WOT run in 3rd/4th gear was 4.46
When flowing 212.4 it was seeing 3.68 Engine Load
Max turbo boost 16.55 PSI mapped.

and i was doing a fair rate of Leptons at the time :D

Hopefully at really cold air temps i.e. <5/6C i would expect MAF to rise to c. 2.14 or so, and load to creep up a tiny bit too. I run nothing but 99RON. For a std 3cat 2002 WRX wagon with almost 80K on the clock i don't think that's too bad.

I can't wait to change the rest of the exhaust and run just the one cat. I've got a TSL GrpN SS backbox which makes a nice deep rumble and i'll probably set boost somewhere between 17/18psi, and alter timing and AFR just a little bit when the whole exhasut is on. That's as much as i will dare do just to keep it on the safe side!! I'm happy with it so far.

Refresh my memory - what are the mods on the car or is it pure mapping to it so far?

Engine mods consist of :

TSL Green Panel Air Filter
Snorkus Mod
TSL GrpN Stainless Steel Backbox
Half turn positive on Wastegate arm (with a whole turn it overboosts slighty)
Mapping

thats it...so far ;)

I wouldn't have said these mods have made a massive difference on their own excluding mapping, although when i first did the air filter and snorkus mod it felt a bit sharper on the throttle, bearing in mind it was running a standard map. When i changed the backbox if anything it kind of felt a tad slower for some odd reason on the standard map, although it sounded very nice but it just didn't feel right. I reckon the standard map relies on a bit of extra back pressure to help it run at the standard low boost map therefore perhaps the twin pipe is there for a reason. It could even just be my imagination but i'm quite sensitive to tiny changes in the way my car drives, you may well be the same yourself.

However...since i started mapping i think changing the back box was actually a good thing as i genuinely feel it has helped the engine to exhale better and spool up a tad quicker as boost kicks in at around 2800/2900 rpm right the way through to 5800rpm where it starts to tail off fairly quickly as a matter of safety, but that's only because i made it so and the TD04 turbo doesn't do bigpower at high revs in any case. I reckon the standard twin pipe backbox would have been a bit restrictive if i'd have left it on, and i wouldn't be seeing such a big difference over standard mapping.

I like enginuity software because it's easy to use with a little knowledge, out of the box, it has a great datalogger, and it's free :D I refuse to pay for an EcuTek map because it then means you can only edit it with EcuTek (bloody expensive for a licence in my honest opinion) and apparently it locks out your ECU from being read by anything else so you can't even wipe it without having EcuTek software and EcuTek dedicated OBDII interface cable and box.

How are you getting on with yours? The last time we chatted i think you said a tuner that uses enginuity was doing some mapping for you. That sounds quite interesting, and the only tuner i've heard of in the UK that uses Enginuity. EcuTek seems to rule the roost UK Wide.

P.S. I hear the chaps at OpenECU are working on real-time mapping software for use with a Tactrix cable. That means really accurate mapping and your own road dyno anywhere you go...i can't wait :thumb:

I was reading an interesting thread on NASIOC yesterday about engine load:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthr ... ?t=1099390

I read that about live tuning and road dyno too :D i already have road dyno with ecutek deltadash and use the live data overlay facility in enginuity but live tuning would be an interesting step forward.

Zak at Mocom doesnt use Ecutek, he uses EcuEdit and has done all my mapping to date apart from a few revisions recently where I have been experimenting in relatively safe areas in small steps to cure an erratic idle with the larger injectors that was causing long term fuel trims to fluctuate massively having a random effect across the range. So far this has been very informative and has improved the performance according to my data.

I think on the WRX OE map, there is such a degree of safety that it is quite intolerant of exhaust changes as it would be fighting with boost control to keep boost down. Even with just a backbox change there would be some degree of oscillation of boost that would make it feel not 100% right. What OS software do you use?

I do all the map changes with the Dual-Core PC i built running Windows XP Pro X64, which is much quicker than doing it all on a laptop, and then i do all the logging and map loading using an old Dell 1GHz Laptop running Windows XP Pro. It's not a bad system and works really well.

I would like to learn how to do all the mapping in Hex but i never got around to reading and writing Hex although i know a lot of tuners do.

I know ECUedit can also run in real-world values but i don't really like using it, so instead of ECUedit i do it all with Enginuity as it gives real-world values in a really easy to understand format, and graphically it's more pleasing on the eye when you've been sat there a while looking at the screen. I like using the 3D view of the maps too which lets me see how smooth or agressive the map is not just by values but visually too which for me is a help.

I use ECUexplorer to do ECU resets and faultcode reading, and i like using it because you can reset your ECU on the fly while the engine is ruinning.

Finally ECUflash for loading to and downloading from the ECU, plus you can actually edit a map with it if you need to make a very quick change but i haven't done that with it yet as again we are talking Hex values.

You mentioned Boost oscillations...yes there were and the half turn positive on the wastegate arm sorted that one out and made sure i was hitting boost target too :D

I am truly jealous because you have the deltadash  and i have heard great things about it. Cracking piece of kit and no doubt i would get a lot of use from it, especially features like accurate datalogging, working out best gear change speed/revs, 0-60 and of course WBHP/Torque. Mind you maybe not a good idea to get one as think of the petrol you get through trying all the features out.

What do you think about Racelogic DriftBox/PerformanceBox? I've fancied one of those for a while now?

Looking on the NASOIC forum i notice these guys are running some big injectors and some of them must be running fuel pressure at least 3.5 - 4.0bar to get the max engine load figures around the 6.5 mark. Mine still has the standard fuel pump/pressure reg running at 3bar with std WRX 380cc injectors so even with good mapping i probably won't see any more than about 270-280 bhp at the flywheel unless i up the fuel pressure which will get me to 290 - 300bhp, or change injectors to 500cc STi pinks.... yes please ;) Although i know with larger injectors you have to make changes to the flow scaling and injector timing. did you manage to smooth out the idle just by changing injector timing, or did you have to tweak the flow scaling a bit as well?

I can only imagine yours must be doing about the same or similar to these chaps on NASOIC. Your scoob must be bloody quick. I'm looking forward to eventually getting up to one of these meets at Snet to check out your scoob and hopefully a BigPower track meet, again at snet so i can get a pax lap in yours :D

Been tweaking again this morning (just minor stuff) and logged a 3.28 engine load (on 32bit ECU - this equates to 6.56 in old money). Strangely it doesnt feel that quick as I rarely really open it up in 1st or 2nd and in 3rd I run out of speed limit too quickly to see what it does.

Still, I reckon I can get to 3.4 engine load with some proper tweaks when the wideband kit and det cans arrive next week and possibly more with fancy fuel.

Running modified 550 injectors that flow around 800cc so there is loads of room on IDC for when a turbo upgrade goes on.

EcuEdit is good if you have paid for the unlock code as without it you have to wait frigging ages for it to save :x so I tend to avoid it.

Deltadash is a great tool - I bought mine second hand off scoobynet for about

I recommend doing map tweaks with enginuity, it's quick and easy and works well every time. The ECU definitions are as good as they get and as comprehensive as you can get.

Dont quote me on this, but I think you need to overwrite the AP with a fresh ROM then tune that. http://www.openecu.org or NASIOC should provide some more info.
