subaru oil surge

i am pressuming that oil surge is when the g force of the corner moves the oil away from the pick up pipe :?:
does your oil light let you know if there is a problem or the dulcet tones of your bigends trying to escape : :?: :!: :!:
i dont wish to fit R888 if this is going to increase the risk , more grip more g force :?:
would be interested on your experiences of this
cheers

Jason - not really had an oil surge problem on mine in any shape (that I am away of)
My oil pressure light is no longer there and is replaced by a pressure gauge and that reads fine.
What you will find (possibly) is extended G corners throws the oil up into a breather pipe.
In the std arrangement this breather is fed back into the intake for emmissions puposes and obviously big globs of oil going in isnt great for the engine.
I replaced this breather arrangement with a oil catch can that did the job well enough until certain situations caused the can to fill up and empty under the car - see my project thread for the full story on this :thumb:

thanks for that i will check it out , i wonder if there are any subtle design differences between our engines :?:

Theres an extra breather on mine but it is a problem that happens to all subaru engines from what I have discovered if the right situation exists....
I have only discovered this at Coram (high G, high speed) ... once I got used to the circuit and got some speed with laps at around 1min 25 and Silverstone around Luffield lapping at 1 min 9-10.
The problem doesnt exist on tracks such as Nurburgring or Cadwell as either these types of corners dont exist there or I am not at the right corner speed.
Sticky rubber will get you closer to this point.
Definitely worth putting a catch tank in from my point of view - just helps to protect it.
Sure its not a sexy modification but safety is important.

I've seen it once, on a trip to Scotland on a long right hand bend. In this instance it was due to low oil level and it manifested itself by the oil pressure guage dropping a bar or so. Fortunately, spotted immediately and no harm done.
To get oil surge with the correct oil level isn't easy, it needs quite high cornering speeds on a long right hand bend. The only person I know who's achieved it was Paul from Zen Performance and I for one, have a long way to go before my car can pull the sort of cornering G that his can manage.
The key thing is check your oil level often and get used to it's usage. On track days, carry a spare can of oil and check the level after every outing.
It seems that some cars use a lot and some don't.
