Living with Toyo 888's

Thinking about buying some of these to fit on my car prior to trackday or drag day. I would fit them at home and then drive to the circuit/track any idea of the mileage that can be got from them ???

Dont know how long they will last.

But on another note, I've driven on Dunlop D01J's (very similar tyre) on the road and in anything other than hot, dry conditions I wouldnt recomend using them.
They need warming up before they will grip properly so if you do decide to drive on them, pray it doesnt rain or worse and drive really carefully.

Thanks for the post ants13, i was planning on getting a tyre like that but i am glad you have said about the perils of them as now there is no way i will be getting them!

AlexB uses them for twelve months of the year, and yes, standing water/ice/snow is not good news, but most other conditions are fine. Considering you have qualified your use for driving to and from trackdays I would say they are just about perfect. A few of us that were going to do the Time Attack (http://www.timeattack.co.uk) series this year were going to use them for this purpose, I think Mike-Payne still is.

The only consideration I would say that you should make is that the higher grip levels may mean that oil starvation is more likely. I do not know whether this is a factor on the RB25 but precaution being what it is.........................

yes that's thought

For the amount i will use them though i cant see it being too much of an issue

I have used yoko A048's in all conditions and highly rate them.

The 888's are not no good for drag racing on tho and i believe they have difficulties with heat and degrading during a heat cycle.

I ran R888's last year for track days....
Had no issues to and from the track. TBH they are fantastic on the road in the dry... BUT they make SOO much road noise that they drive you up the wall!!!!
I also ran them at Snetterton in heavy rain (See my posting pic), i still managed to out brake the Porsche GT3 :-D
But it was very slippery and required a little more subtle throttle control...

I would happily recommend them for track use and many of the Pro drivers in the TA series are running them and they are nearly all in excess of 500BHP....
Take regular exercise, walk to you car!

Reading back my post it does sound a bit over cautious,


For track use they are worth the money, theres no doubting that, and I wouldnt say not to get them but just to remember that most road tyres are a compromise so that they work well in all conditions, where as D01J's R888 A048's etc are road legal trackday tyres so arent always suited to conditions you may find on the road.

Even though I wouldnt use my do1j's on the road too often I wouldnt get rid of them for track use.

So what would you reccomend for a very sticky road/track tyre that wont throw you in a hedge when you run over a damp patch?

R888's wont throw you in a hedge if your driving within the limits of the car and conditions.

The only reason I wont use them on the road is that at the moment the weather conditions can change too quickley and I dont wanna be stuck driving along in snow, sleet, heavy rain with a tyre that has next to no tread on.

Tyre choice is too much of a personal choice for me to say which tyres you'll prefer. Your best bet is to try it and see if you get on with them.

On a side note about yoko a048's and a032's, I have heard nothing but good things about either of these tyres including using them in damp conditions so they may be worth a punt.

If you wanted to try my d01j's they are mounted on r32 gtr rims so they may fit your motor, or you could come out with me on the 28th at snet if your coming along to the trackday.
