Pro's & Cons of Dyno's

ive spoken to the UK dyno dynamics distributor and hes said if you have spoken with Dyno Dynamics and they have no recollection of any meeting or discussion - if you did speak to DD (possibly at autosport) then you may have got the wrong end of the stick.
he also said "after 40 years of evidence we have gathered - yes we make engine dyno's too - we are generally within 6 hp of the engine dyno figure even on cars that make massive power eg the evo that made 611 on engine dyno and we estimated 614,3 hp out on a 600 plus bhp car is good !"

EVO 7 with 2300cc,GT35,HKS 272's,1000cc,MOTEC...the list goes on..
Hurrumph, so much for DD's sales rep in the UK, you'd have thought that he'd recall a potential sale but ho-hum, he has my card...
The guys I spent a long time talking to though Allen and David who are the guys from Oz and who really know the system behind the scenes better than anybody else. They were at pains to state that their accuracy claims are all based on calculated mode rather than shootout mode, which as they make very clear is consistent, repeatable test over and above an accurate one.
As you know when you are mapping repeatablitly and reliablity is generally preferable to overall accuracy but they make a pretty good stab at all three and favour the each of the aims appropriately given each mode of operation.
Gary, if you want the full ins and outs do you want me to set up a conference call with DD Australia?

Glad to see that opinions are being swapped without anything turning daft. Surely a dynos principle purpose is something that we all agree on. Equally, I think we all agree that there is no point comparing apples to oranges. Dynos differ from tuner to tuner.........the shootout mode goes some way to equalising that between DD tuners.....or am I wrong?

the way the dd ones work is that when run out of shootout mode you only get a @wheels figure but yes you can alter the ramp rate of dyno then.
we use this mode when mapping but all figures given have been run in shootout mode thats correct for the car
as stuart says there are problems comparing any dyno results,even with DD doing what they can to make dynos read the same incorrect running from operater can make results worthless too
after using many dynos in the last 5 years i can honestly say if any thing happened to mine i would replace it again with the same one!!!!
i really dont need to run my dyno in any other way to get repeatable readings as i get that day in day out running how i do

In dyno mode they're great as Gary says, in shootout mode YMMV. As long as you understand the difference between the two types of run that you can do then there should be no problems.dynamix wrote:Sorry but I dont get it.

I don't like the way that DD do shootouts but since they have the flexibility to run in a number of different ways that doesn't matter - if they're my rollers then I can run do a full power run each time and just ignore the shootout mode altogether. Yes it will take a shade longer to do but that's my problem and it's getting cars onto and off the rollers that takes at much of the time.
You are quite right, their shootout mode does try and make sure that you will receive the same result from a run in shootout mode whichever set of DD rollers that you run on.
