Oil analysis
Thanks Duncan 8) I'll trry to be brief
I don't know quite what's going on with my engine. Impreza 2.5L & a few mods. 30K ish miles (speedo hasn't worked for a year or so). Main use is track and sprints with driving to & from and a recent trip to Scotland that frightened the life out of me and put oil shares to an all time high. Usually use Motul 300V 15/50 but have tried Millers 10/60 and it now has Mobil 1 15/50 by default (all I could get).
The car suffers high temps. on track >120 and have let it go to 130 & 136 in a 'red mist' moment :-D so I plan an oil cooler very soon. Oil gets changed at about 3K miles.
Feb. I did the Snetterton sessioned track day and by lunch had used the 2L spare Millers and needed more. The morning was wet so not giving it max. Temps went to 130 quite quickly (3 or 4 laps) so I have to back off for a couple of laps but it soon rises again.
I spoke to one of the tuners, whilst buying Millers 10/60 as he doesn't stock Motul and he suggested raising part of the crank case breather pipe that vents to atmos. Changed the oil & filter, altered the breather and did the Marham track day. High temps, up to 136 but consumption for the day was 0.5L after lots of laps.
Changed oil to the usual Motul 15/50 went for a trip to Scotland and checked the oil after 250 miles of 4K (80 mph) motorway cruise, topped up with 2.5 Litres
completed the 150 miles to destination and topped up with 1.5L.
Cut the breathers short and put them into the empty oil can, to catch what was being breathed and after the journey home and another 3L This time I was having to use Mobil 1 15/50 from Halfords, as it was all I could get.
Did a sprint last Sunday, 100 mile round trip mostly B roads, and 4 short blasts round the wet track and it used nothing.
I've hunted round and this seems common with non standard 2.5L builds although the short engine was new from Subaru supplier in US and has std. internals.
So, high consumption, during off boost, motorway cruise and high temps. on track. soon to have a cooler fitted and fresh oil & filter. Currently has a mix of Motul 15/50 and Mobil 1 15/50. Compression test is good i.e. 2 x 175psi 1 x 170 psi 1 x 160psi.
Perhaps not the best time to have an analysis done?
Sorry if this is too long or should be a new thread.
