The Megasquirt is an interesting bit of kit. It's not that sophisticated but does what's required and it's really just a case of getting used to the interface and how MS works. Had problems getting the software to work on Gerry's laptops, works on mine OK after much fiddling about but it seems to do it's thing.
Not really had a chance to play with it in anger although it connects to the ECU and reads all the relevant parameters OK, plus you can actually make changes on the move without having to stop and reflash all the time. I've been reading up on how the MS works and regardless of what the software/hardware is we're all mapping similar parameters and looking for the same results so it all ends up being much of a muchness in the end once you've had time to play with it anger.
Gerry's runs without a MAF so it's a Speed Density (SD) MAP (VE based) and fairly straight forward. I presume you have a MAF sensor on your bimmer so if you decide to use the MS it might be a good time to run MAFLESS.
The latest MS ECU is actually a very good bit of kit in it's own right and is now as advanced as other well known aftermarket ECU's without costing anywhere near as much. It can now run closed loop mode and be mapped for any fuel including Nitrous. It will run a turbo or supercharger and can facilitate switchable mapping on-the-fly.
Not bad if you're on a budget and need something you can tweak yourself. Until i've had a chance to play with Gerry's properly i can't offer any further advice. If Gary has experience with MS i can't think of a safer pair of hands to be in around your neck of the woods.
Edited to add: Here's a good resource for MS software and MS tweaking/logging utilities and plain english guides. http://www.diyautotune.com/softwarelinks.htm
