Thing is, it's a balance between what the rings, cams and bearings need - all of which are different
Chris,

I can only hope that your tuner is experienced with TotalSeal rings and that you're not using them on a powerful turbocharged engine.

My best advice would be to take them out and fit proper rings before you cost yourself an engine like I did !!

I would rather have chocolate piston rings than TotalSeal.

That made me smile :)

Surely the original poster should be asking the guy that built the engine what he thinks.

Jacko is now in Cyprus with the army so i doubt he'll reply to this. From memory he rebuilt the engine himself, finished it, then shipped the car over to Cyprus with him :coolgleamA:

Well, I built the engine myself but the piston/ring supplier has a lot of experience with these upto 500hp T16 rover engines so I used the ring gaps he supplied - They are the "normal" rings with gaps rather than the totalseal overlapping rings if that makes any difference?

I always think that people will have a variety of experiences, good and bad, about the very same product. Essentially if you trust the guy that is building your engine I would take that opinion over anything I'd read on the net. Discuss your thoughts and findings beforehand and you should be fine.

Fence sitting over.

Fair enough.

I had a set of pistons with the half thickness overlapping type in an RB26 that totally destroyed the engine and everything else running the oil dry in the sump repeatedly. But then the engine builder was a world class cockend that I wouldnt trust to rebuild my lawnmower !!
