Ignition barrel query

Post by RX7 »

Guys,

My daily is being a pain. Firstly I had the car tracking done last week by a company. Since then the ignition barrel is really stiff and was sticking. Did the wd40 job on it but it's still stiff and sticking a bit when car is started. Queried it with the company who have said that it wasnt anything they have done. My thoughts are someone has forced it without wiggling the wheel to release the steering lock. But difficult to prove.

Anyway it's now got bad enough to the point of the electrics still being on when I take the key out until I put the key back in and wiggle it.

Therefore I am going to ring Robinsons tomorrow and Gsf to see what can be done.

My question really is, does this sound like a new ignition barrel job ? How much is this likely to cost and more importantly will it be the same lock as the one that's in there at the moment. What I mean is the same key ?

Cheers,
Gareth

It does sound like you will need to change the ignition barrel and googling suggests that the switch that goes with the barrel fails at regular intervals. You normally change the door locks when you do the ignition so that you can keep all of them on the same key, but unless it's all transponder driven you shouldn't be forced into this. Cost wise eBay has lots of options anything from

Thanks for looking though mate. Really appreciate it. After not getting anywhere with Robinsons and them not ringing me back I will try NVWC tomorrow.

We've just got Em's back from the insurers after her black ice 'incident' .. I thought it was a write off, luckily Aviva didn't ... new bumper + fittings, new wing + fittings, new lights, repaint of drivers door, wheel trim, door trims .. about 2k's worth based on insurance prices!.

Basically I bought a pup. Shit happens and it's the first time I've been caught out, so out of 40+ cars that's not too bad.

Anyway, back on topic, best of luck Gareth.
